96-00 Newb Questions
Okay guys take it easy on my i have never owned a front wheel drive car in my life let alone a honda but i may be coming over to this side
I will be looking at a civic between 96-00 as i want something cheap but nothing too old..So if anyone has a site that gives all the specifications on the 96-00 style including options and everything for them let me know. Also is there anything i should make sure the car doesn't have or anything to watch out for? what about any feature i will want the thing to have?
I will want to get one with a sunroof does that mean that it has to be an SI? are SI's the only model that comes with a sunroof? or was it an option for others?
And i haven't decided on a hatchback or a coupe yet...what are your guys opinions on that? and i know for 96-00 if i get an si it has to be a coupe...are they much quicker than the hatchback's assuming all are 5 speed?
Sorry for the newb questions guys i'm deffinately not a honda guy

http://www.kellybluebook.com should have car reviews on their website. sunroofs are not just on the SI model, but the SI is the better civic out of the bunch. as for the hatchback being quicker than the SI coupe, i couldn't give you a definite answer on that. as for the condition, i would just check for rust, test drive the car, find out if it needs anything or when the last maintenance was done. also, IMO look for a Honda that's stock when you buy it. might just be a preference thing but a car that's already been modified could turn out to be a nightmare cause it was more likely to be driven hard. hope this helps and welcome to honda-tech
98 EX was the Canadian SI
If I had to do it over again I would look for a 99SI but they are getting hard to come by in good shape around here.
I have a 98 EX and its been a good car. No real problems to speak of, just small noises that I've had to fix. ~35mpg Hwy and never got under 30. Used for commute, so I choose not to mod it.
If your looking for speed go SI. And I agree on buying one that isn't modded. *unless they are the mods your going to do anyway* even then it might be iffy. lol.

well i have a 99 civic ex coupe. it has the sunroof. i like it. but i would rather have a hatchback. look through all the tech pages and plain on what you are going to do. i did that and i got one and did and integra motor swap. good luck and welcome (if you join the darkside

well i have my mustang pretty done up so i dont think any model of civic is going to feel "fast" lol... i just want something that wont feel too slow...and if i want something quick it would need to be well over 300hp and come with something called "torque"
i just want a nice daily driver that gets good gas mileage and is comfortable and a good daily driver..and if i want something quick then i will just not mess around and do a full engine swap and add a turbo..but for now i dont plan on adding any cai's or fart cannons lol..just maybe some nice lights, leather interior, short shift something like that just to make it comfortable...
so is the general opinion that hatchbacks are better or coupe's or what? and were there many hatchbacks with sunroofs or is that pretty rare? Thanks for the help guys

dont talk smack bout hondas y0...... lol nah jp
but hondas a much lighter than your pony so 300hp is stupid fast
240hp in a civic is enough to get a stock gt sweating, but maybe not your built one
anyway you wont hear a general opinion on the civic
but just get a Si for crying out loud...
hatchbacks and coupes are not very different comfort wise, basicaly the same damn car.
but the Si has the B16 standard so just do it...

Coupes arent always faster than Hatches or vice versa. The thing that matters is how you want it to look. I cant stand a hatch, but my best freind loves them to death. If you want the bells and whistles go with a 96-00 Ex. They came with the best SOHC with the D16Y8. Sunroof/Moonroof, power everything. Or you could go with the SI. My freind has a 00 SI and it came with a B16A2. Faster than my 97 Ex. I like to go to like cardomain.com and see what people have and what they are doing to them.
One thing to keep in mind, it looks as if you are from Canada so this might cause some of the info provided to be confusing. The Si in Canada is the same as the EX in the US. The SiR in Canada is the Si in the US.
So with that said:
Canadian SiR/US Si = B16 (160hp)
Canadian Si/US EX = D16 (127hp)
Both of the above mentioned models come with sunroofs and are coupes
I am not a big fan of the hatchbacks (but thats all personal opinion) so I would say get either one of the cars I listed above.
Also, check out http://www.cars.com and click on the research tab at the top. Enter in each of the years between 96-00 and it will show you some specs about the cars. I would recomend looking there for some info and if you have more specific questions come ask them here and you will get your answer.
Keep in mind Candian SiR/US Si was only made in 99-00.
Also,

ya i did a little bit of researching awhile back and i know the si (sir in canada) that has 160 is only 99-00...but they are a lot more money than a regular 96-98 si or hatch so i will be just getting one of those and then if i want to put money into it i will just go with an s2000 engine or rsx s or some type r engine... but for now i just want something that isn't going to make me feel like i am standing still when i have it floored haha...
so i guess i just have to figure out if i want a hatch or coupe and go from there...thanks for the info guys...if you see my *** posting more newb questions help me out
thanks guys

Yeah, s2000 engine is for a RWD s2000 and doesn't work to well in a natively FWD civic
I suppose technically it is possible but I know you don't intend on doing that kind of work. I personally would pick a 99-00 SiR (if you're Canadian) over any of the other civics. BTW I hate ford but that's my opinion.

If you are set on a 96-00 the coupe Si for you will have the D16Y8 (127hp) and the best you can get in a hatch from those years is around 100hp (might be 106, d16y7 or y5, correct me if im wrong). Might not sound like much of a difference but when the power is this low it is.
Of course a swap could change this (if you so desire).
As far as engine swap, check this thread for some very good info.
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=878010
S2000 (F20/F22) would not be easy into a Civic. It prob has been done but you would need a FWD tranny to bolt up to the F2x and that might be more toruble than its worth in your case (since you are only looking for a DD).
Good luck

haha alright thanks guys...so whats the best engine to put in if someone wanted to throw in? rsx s or integra/civic type r engine? then if someone wanted to turbo it i'm assuming they would have trouble due to the high compression so they would need deeper dish pistons or make the combustion chambers bigger to lower compression??? just trying to convert my ford knowledge to rice
and say i took a 97 and put in this higher hp engine and then turbo's it with full exhaust and alll the "bolt-ons" how quick they usually get with slicks??? or is nitrous just the way to go and leave the high compression?

Erm... ford and honda engines use the same laws of physics, so yes you would have to do somethin like you listed to decrease the compression ratio. And "ford to rice"? I didn't say "junk to honda" when referring to ford. Turbo is better than nitrous.
how quick would they be then with lower compression and a turbo?
and you can't just say turbo is better than nitrous because it all depends on the application and the use of the vehicle..
and i know i'm not saying honda is ****..if i was thinking that i wouldn't be interested in getting one

Take everything you know about Ford x Easy = Honda.
Hondas are meant to be economical, so just because they can't go in a straight line Reeeeeaaalll fast doesn't mean they're not fun to drive, nor does it mean that they're not fast, the difference is in cornering.
Not all of us like to put 3-foot tall alumminum spoilers, and neon ground kits, or nitrous for that matter on our cars. You'll understand it better when you buy one, that is if and when you learn to drive it.
Hatches are lighter, but it always depends on what model you get.
The RSX-s (k20a) motors are powerful, but a bit heavier that the others, IMO in an EK (96-00) seems like it would be a bit front heavy. Both the Civic Type R (b16b) and Integra Type R (b18c5) are very well balanced motors, and would be ideal for any civic or integra.
Some FI civics done right can attain mid to low 12s and some lower, but this of course sacrifices your economy; then again i guess any import is weight in your wallet compared to that linear-restricted flying Turd. Get a Cobra R and i'll shut up.

I could be wrong but I thought I read in a couple places that the k20 is actually lighter than the b18...

10.4s....I dont know? Depends on the engine, car, turbo, gas, tuning, etc.

Ok I am wrong for assuming I wouldnt have to explain my statement. If cost is a consideration than I guess nitrous would be better. If you want more power with a wider power range (depending on tuning of course) and have the money then a turbo would be better. How many professional races utilize nitrous instead of turbo? I'm not talking about straightline either.

whats the sense of buying a beater/ daily driver if you wanna put on turbos etc..
tell you what kid, first BUY the car, then save up some cash, THEN talk to us about turbos.
oh and 300hp in a 3500-4000 lb car isn't exactly fast. 300rwhp on the other hand...

for starters my car is only 3100lbs with full interior....it is a 248a model which is basically a lighter version because it has no options like fog lights or cruise control power seats etc....and it has well over 300hp..thats NA and it is setup for nitrous..so with a 100 shot nx it would be at close to 450rwhp..
second i dont plan on making a powerful civic because i dont think they can compete with making a mustang in making it quick..i am just trying to learn more about civics and their potential before i make a decision on buying them...but nobody seems to give me a straight up answer all i get is it depends...not like well bob smith her ran 12.5 with (list of mods) or anything like that..but whatever thanks to those of you that are being helpful
