I have an inspection due and I failed b/c i have a small exhaust leak. It is right on the flex pipe off of the downpipe (like the piece of pipe right below the motor). So is there any easy way to fix this, and still pass inspection? I was just gonna throw some muffler mender or something cheap like that on there, but i am worried it won't pass then. Is there anything that I could pick up from auto zone for cheap, without having to replace the whole pipe?

is the leak before the cat-converter? if so your best bet is to take it to the muffler shop and have them weld it for about 40 bucks, if its after the cat, you will be able to patch it up with some high temp muffler tape/wrap, which is only temporary. The reason for this is that it gets to hot before the cat that it will melt off the tape when your car warms up...

it isn't a big hole at all... less then the 1/2" diameter, is there anything i can do?

well since you sound cheap "under $10 fix" I recommend you use exhaust tape to cover the hole. They sell at autozone, kragen, pep boys, etc...

right way would be for you to cut off that section and weld in a new pipe section.

it should be good enough for the inspection until you get some more money for a real fix.

 

spot weld it with an ARC welder no matter how ugly it is it'll seal
