Default Info wanted: B16B in EDM EE9

Hey all...

In the (near) future I want to do the following:

I want to swap a b16b engine with (or without) tranny into a 1991 EE9 Civic.

Some questions, I hope you can help me out and give me some info:

-Will this fit?
-Can I keep my engine mounts?
-What do I need to change (apart from harness)
-Would my HKS B18C6 header fit this engine, and will I gain something?
-I already bought a S1 tranny (w/o LSD, was planned to install that on another B16A1 engine but sold that car); will this fit the B16B, or is it better to use the matching B16B gearbox?
-Any other things I need to think about?

Thanx,

cheers from Holland

The B16B uses a GSR block making the install identical to that of any vtec B18C.
Do a obd1 conversion to run it.

The rest of the info can be found through the "search".

Thanx buddy!

Won't happen in the near future, but I'm putting together my part-list, my wish-list and my "things not to forget"-list, so when the moment comes I can start building immediately.

Thanx again,

Greetz,

B16B's are overrated...but maybe that's just me. For the same $ you can get a B18C with some toys abd beat the living **** out of a B16B every day of the week.

oh yeah...and weekends too.

I don't drive during the weekends Bas! lol

more people "warned" me for the B16B (torgue-less), just like you did. But I still think I'm going to choose a B16B over a B18C. Just because almost no people do... And if I don't like it after all, I can always change to a B18C....

It still is future-music, never know what the future is going to bring

Thanx Bas

If you just want to do something nobody else has done, swap in a Rover motor. Engine mounts are easily converted, and it's basically just a copy of a honda D series.

Anyway, if you want to throw away $$$ go right ahead. But for less money you can have your B16A built to out perform a B16B.

hey bro.... if you have a VTi with a B16A...

the B16B can bolt in using your existing mounts and brackets.... the B16B will be taller since it has the B18C style case with more deck height...... i think you should be just fine given that "bump-up" style hood.....

the B18C6 header may or may not fit depending on the style it is... the stock CTR header will be a cast 4-2-1 piece with a large flange " JDM 2.5" style " collector (as folks call it ) stainless downpipe ...like almost any oem honda exhaust manifold.....it should be the same as 96 spec ITR....but not the 4-1 98+ spec ITR tubular piece.......this 421 piece may be one of the "best" choices for you in that particular car chassis since it will provide the clearance necessary in that chassis .... in terms of the front cross member..and front motor mount...

the HKS header may or may not fit with the mount/crossmember intact depending on if its a 4-1 vs 4-2-1 short primary vs 4-2-1 long primary....

the wiring you will need to figure out what you want to do.... i probably would go OBD1 and use the existing chassis harness... and depin the connectors on the chassis harness and make them compatible with the the B16B plugs (if you can get the approriate chassis side plugs)...or do the reverse on the motor since you will be taking out a b16a with a sub-harness on it full of obd0 connectors that you could harvest....

hydro tranny will not be easily made to fit into your original b-series EF chassis..... so u will want to use a cable one....

and as far as how people are always criticizing the B16B and saying its a waste of money and to get a B18C-R...dont mind it....they may be right in many ways....but they are different engines.....I have a B18C5 in my CRX HF.. and i had a B16A with some mods, aftermarket valve train, etc in my last (slightly heavier) car... and all i can say is.......there is something very charming about that ~77mm stroke ... i definitely miss it..... the B18C-R is definitely a nice little motor but the B16B is such a lovely little screamer.... it is nothing to scoff at... altho u "might as well" go with the B18 if the price is comparable....

Dude, thanx a million!!!

This is the car I'll be re-building:

It's a 1990 EDM Civic 1.6i VT with a B16A1 engine (and the "bump-up" style hood as you so nicely put it )

As for the HKS Header: This is the one I'll be using (praying to God it'll fit!!)

It came off a 2002 (I think) Honda Integra Type R B18C6, the previous owner assured me this would fit and make some nice numbers too. (And since he is quite well-known here in Holland for his perfect way of building/tuning an engine I believe him)

As for the wiring: I'll look into that as soon as I decide what engine I'll be using.

Do I understand your remark correctly about the gearbox? Won't the B16B tranny fit my car? In case it doesn't, do I need to make any changes to the JDM S1 tranny for making it work with the B16B/B18C? (Yeah i know, I'm a NOOB).

Finally someone who knows what I want: a N/A 10k rpm screamer!! I've been told that the B16B engine is just perfect for that, more suitable than a B18C6 Type R engine... As a matter of fact I've been told that the B16B is the strongest B-series engine Honda has developed...Do you know if this all is correct?
Again: thank for responding, really cool!!!

That header is gonna give you plenty of grief.

And about the "strongest" engine, that depends on what you're looking for. The B18C doesn't like high revving as of standard, because it's not made with that in mind. It does LOVE boost however. Granted, with work it'll outperform just about every honda engine out there, except maybe a custom built 2 liter.

The B16B was purposebuilt for high rev applications. So it's no surprise it takes to high revs. But just stop and think for a second before you get that engine and drop it in.

How much would a B16B set you back money wise? Would you have any history mainetance reassurance?
How much would a B16A set you back? I can get you a shitload of parts from stateside. I'll bet you a case of good beer that the built B16A route will be faster and cheaper at the same time.

I can help you build that 10K Rpm screamer. You shouldv'e bought my N/A set I just sold....!!

Good morning Bas.

So, I bought a worthless header???

I'm gonna go high-revvin' N/A all the way, definately NO boost!! So in that case the B16B wouldn't be such a bad choice, would it?

As for the money: I don' t know any prices yet (I know you know better than I do) but any engine swap is gonna cost me serious money anyway (not like I'm a millionaire or so).
Plus I want something not everybody else has!

Thanx again dude!

Hey just to put a bit of euro honda info on this for you

1. Your engine mounts will be fine for the B16b as your EE9 civic came with a B16a
2. With a little work your harness, dizzy & ecu (chipped) will work just fine
3. Your HKS B18 mani will work fine. But the collector will be 60mm so you will need a 60mm system to gain the most power & you need to add 2 o2 sensor bungs in the primarys iirc cyl 3 & 4 are best.
4. Your S1 will work great & really help with the high reving b16b but get a LSD

Come have a look at http://www.hondacrx.co.uk/forum for more euro honda help, we have a few crx's & civics running b16b/b18/b20 on obd0

55mm flanges will work with that collector, if it actually is 60mm.
It's going to sit reeeeealllly friggin low, so be careful not to dent the **** out of it. Some modification to the crossmember (subframe) might be required.

I already ordered a custom-crossmember, so that problem should be solved.

As for the collector: I think it is 60mm, but I need to measure it to be 100% certan of it.

What crossmember? You do know that Z10, FullRace etc will not fit your car, right?

A while ago, I've been in contact with some guys from the UK. They build custom cross-members for the Civic/CRX VT. At least, the USED to build them, yesterday I heard they have stopped.

So now I need another solution... The JIMFAB won't fit because it isn't designed for the Civic/CRX VT.

Suggestions, anyone?
