Theft at vir...
Sad, but true. I waited a little bit to post this - to check all avenues and to see if the lost item would turn up, but it has not. Sometime on Sunday, it appears as though an individual went into my pit area, and removed ~300 dollars between the 1st and 3rd heats. I thought it would be safe in the general pit area, underneath some other personal items, but I stand corrected. Other things including a cell phone and cd's were not touched. Guess this serves as a warning - the circuit racing scene is starting to attract the same lowlifes as the drag racing scene.

That is f---ked up, ceas! It makes me so sad to hear this sort of thing. Reminds me of our beer (and coolers) getting stolen in the infield camping area at the Rolex 24 last month - although that was obviously worth a lot less $$$. Perhaps times are changing after all...
I wonder if this particular instance has anything to do with the guy the track security staff had to forcibly remove for hopping the fence into a non-spectator area during the early afternoon on Sunday? Do you want me to try to find out exactly who that guy was?
Rest assured that I will help you in any way I can, on behalf of Speedtrial and utilizing the resources of the folks we rented the facility from.
So sorry man. Tell me what I can do to help...

Sorry to hear that Ceas. I left my digital camcorder and about $50 in cash under my stuff and was thinking "nobody steals stuff at the track"... That sucks.

The only local I remember seeing was in that black DSM with the chromeys and big "ECLIPSE" lettering. Were there others? Did any of the local girls from the hotel the night before ever show up?
The http://www.importconn.com guys (white ITR, silver Golf/GTI, parked over by the tech shed) were definitely not Stunnaz. They were with me, super cool, and definitely safe to be trusted.
Anybody else we can think of?
Jon
who KNOWS it was NOT "one of us"...
and is pissed off about the whole thing happening on 'my watch'...

that f'n sux ceas...i was parked near you, can't think of anyone odd in the area...though i had classes when you were on track. I had all my camera chit lying out too....was it an item worth around 300, or cash? strange that someone would target your money in particular if it was cash...

That sucks, man. I had a concern about my personal belongings and tools laying out there, but then quickly dismissed it as reliculous.
Just a thought, and I hate to say it, but if it was a common theif they probably would have taken more than the cash. It would be unfortunate to find out it was someone who knows you, and knew when to grab it.

I was right next to you and my wallet was missing too. I just wrote it off as being lost, but maybe not. I only had like $20, and all my cards were with my wife, but it still sucked....actually I do think I lost it cause I had it at lunch to get gas...

odd though if it was a common thief they would hit only the wallet and bypass the rest, as already stated.
if a beatdown is in order, im sure i can rustle up the nc crew to dish it out

I left all my **** out, including a $250 stereo face, a sub box worth about $500, and all my CDs. my **** was parked very far away from Victor, Corey, etc. and to my surprise, nothing was gone. Ceas, I'm very sorry to hear that. Let's hope it was an isolated incident, and not the beginning of a pattern.
Very unusual but not unheard of. Typically (from what I've seen) this becomes an issue when people who are *not* participating in, or involved with, an event like this, are present.
Example: I had a handful of tools and an air compressor walk away at an autocross a few years ago. The autocross was in an urban area with some foot traffic. The parking lot we were in was being "shared" by a quasi-carnival thing with rides and cotton candy and such.
Still surprising at a track event - at VIR or otherwise. Unfortunately I agree with the others who have suggested perhaps it's someone you know, or are at least aquainted with. Hell, that weekend I left the keys in my 99 Suburban all weekend...left my cellphone, digicam, and all sorts of other crap out and had no problems.
--Karl, who does not carry much cash - at the track or otherwise...

I don't find it odd at all that the only thing they took was cash. To me that is the sign of someone who knows what they are doing. They take the smallest, most valuable, easiest to get rid of items only. Cash doesn't get any easier. Cameras and tools need to be sold. Cash doesn't. People like to say that a lot of the hybrid motors are stolen. I am sure some are but for the most part a car thief out for profit doesn't touch the motor/trans. They have serial/VIN numbers stamped in them. Too easy to trace. They will take the generic **** like the interiors, airbags and wheels because it is much harder to get caught with it.

Ugg. Sorry to hear about that Ceas

Or, particular to Speedtrial events, we can stop admitting anyone who isn't "on the list" (i.e. cleared by me first). That means no locals. It's easy to arrange it so that the only people admitted to the facility for any reason are the ones registered in advance with the sanctioning body- drivers, wives, cousins, crew, etc... only.
I'm still operating on the premise that it was not "one of us". I just can't think of ANYONE who attends these activities... who would do such a selfish and stupid thing. Any participant in need of $300 that badly... has no place on or near a road course for any reason, IMHO.
I'm still upset,
Jon
odd though if it was a common thief they would hit only the wallet and bypass the rest .... why would have someone gone into my backpack and took just my wallet, why not the whole backpack?
I'm really sorry to hear about your & ceas's loss, it will definitely give me pause next time I'm at the track to consider how I manage my stuff ... I had over $3,000 in camera equipment that was loaned to me that I kept under my tarp w/ no worries -- It'll be on lockdown next time.
I truly want to believe that it was not "one of us", but I have also experienced theft/vandalism in a *very close* group of friends on two occasions -- both times when only the close group of friends was together, and to this day none of us has any idea who did it except for the perpetrator. Sucks.
