The term 'collector's car' is seriously overused. Buy a copy of "Sports Car Market" if you want to find out what real collectors consider collectible. The number of Japanese cars on that list can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
A front wheel drive coupe with a plastic interior and fake carbon fibre is never going to cut it.

I think eventually it probably will. With so many being stolen/stripped and wrecked, there won't be that many at all. And consider this - it's one of the last true "sports cars" out there. No leather/sunroof/AC/traction control/power seats/MacPherson struts...it has a rod-actuated shifter, not cable...the new Integra is porkier, the M3 is a luxury car, as will be the new Z...what else is out there? Even the EVO and WRX are dressed-up sedans bristling with technology. Definitely an instant classic.

Well, if you take into consideration that many auto enthusiast magazines have heralded the Integra Type R as "THE best handling front wheel drive car, EVER" then it would be safe to say they will eventually be a collectors item. Maybe not the 2000 and 2001 models, but definetely the 97 and 98 models.
It's a f'in *****. Mine won't be worth **** after I stuff it and beat the dents out of it with a 2 lb sledgehammer.

Oh so I should put my 01 in the gabage and get a 98cw?
So it being the last year of the ITR won't add anything to the value?
what about being the 0026th one off the line?

Actually I think if you buy it and park it for the next 25 years it may be worth more money, but so will just about any car. As long as you keep it under 100 original miles you should turn a profit.
Who wants to do that though? Waste of a good sports car IMO...

Collector's cars get the status from regular people like you and me. 40 years from now when we're old retired geezers, if we see a '97 ITR and go up to the owner and say, "I'll give you $120000 (adjusted for inflation) for that 45 year old car," THEN you'll know that it's a collector's car. They're the unique cars that make people want them even when they're in shoddy condition.
Even the most radically priced, rarest-of-the-rare muscle cars are still a shitty investment.
I saw a 1968 Shelby GT500 for like $125k ~ a tenfold increase in value in (at the time) 30 years - I don't think that keeps pace with the market.
Perhaps not resale value, but my 1998 has become more valueable to me with every sad story I read about a wreck or theft. There may come a time when there are so few that they "cost what they cost" if you simply must have them.
Kinda like Belloque (sp?) talking to Indiana Jones in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" about the watch - worthless, but bury it in the sand for 10,000 years and it becomes priceless. Try to find a 1955 VW Beetle ragtop - you pay what the seller asks - they are so rare, they set their own market.
It's all academic, I wouldn't sell mine... and no one is going to offer me $1M for it anyway.

The ITR is not a car that is likely to increase in value for some time. We will all likely be driving something much nicer by the time it happens (20+ years)

ITR is not worth keeping around and wait for a profit. If you plan on making a profit with this car than you do not know how to manage money. If you buy a ITR drive it like it was meant to be driven.
It will. The question is: can you wait that long?
Figure 25-30 years.
It was limited production and only ran for 4 model years. That should be 3000-4000 total (specific figures????). Many will be abused, wrecked, stolen for parts, and modified significantly.
If 10% remain in prime, unaltered shape, then that is precious few.

WHO CARES? I'm taking my car to the grave with me. If they want me to sell it, they will have to take it out of my death grip.
As much as I like the R, I don't see it will increase value.
It is not THAT limited if you think about it.

They may NEVER get produced in yellow again
