I have a quick question on installing main,and rod bearings. My block's previous owner spun a bearing, but everything was perfect when i took it to the machine shop, to have it cleaned and honed,they removed the main berings also,told me that my block looked very good(i had previously cleaned it). My question is i'm installing brand new acl's so will i be fine when installing them, will they fit perfect,what should i use to tap them in place,also with the rod bearings how do i install those,just put them in place?

 

If a bearing was spun, you have to replace the crank.

 

yeah i know that, but the crank is actually in decent shape and is usable, but just in case i had already decided to use another one that a friend of mine will let go for $40.

 

There's no "it's in decent shape and useable", it has to be replaced.

Yeah, good choice, machined cranks require thicker bearings which means they're softer. Not a good idea for an engine that sees anything other than daily driving around town.

well, what did the shop machine the crank journals to? did they touch just the main journals or the rod journals too? did you confirm their measurements? did they check the align bore on the main caps?

as for your question - If you are capable of installing bearings, you should be capable of checking cleances. why dont you see for youself... go get some plastigauge and check the clearnaces firsthand. Check for an article called the definitive gsr build by boostedhyrbid. He tends to be precies and thorough in his writeups.

 

go with honda OEM bearings. check the marks on the block and crank. match them to the honda specs. please go with OEM... they are the best.

intstalation is simple, just clean the journals with brake cleaner and push with your fingers the main bearings that's it. put the crank back in place. the use plasti gauge to check clearance. after you check clearance you have to see if they are within spec. if not you will have to go with a thicker or thiner bearing. repeat the process for all bearings. please buy a helms manual it will tell you all you need to do...

don't forget to put the thrust bearing back in the 3rd journal... (was it the 3rd???... hummm i haven't done a buildup in 6 months... i forgot) anyways don't forfet it or your shifts are gonna suck then you destroy your rotating assembly!

 

thanks guys thats what i was looking for. my block is currently apart,its a b16a2 i got from insomniac on here,and my journals are perfect. I'm just assembling everything but with new internals for now. this is my first build(by myself),and swap . stock pistons/rings pretty much a fairly stock setup except for the im & camgears. i was just reading an article on plastigauging,looking for some other articles on installing thrust bearings also. also i'm currently looking for a b16 tranny,and will def. be ready to buy by the 2 wk of next month so if you have one or know anyone please let me know. as for the bearing's i'm ordering tomorrow morning from earl. and thanks joey.
