I was driving home from work last night and there's a red light ahead. I take my foot off the gas, push the clutch in and start to apply the brakes. But as my car slows to zero, the RPMs is still at 5K. I thought the **** was gonna blow up. I look at my feet to make sure I don't have my foot on the gas and brake at the same time (I got big shoes) and that's not it, so I step on the gas (while still on the brake in neutral) and it revs to 6K, then drops to normal idle. Any idea wtf happened? It was scary.
Yeah, sounds like throttle got stuck... maybe you sucked up some debris... <shrug>
Or, it might be the common case of "beered LEAD-FOOT" syndrome. I heard that is a b!tch to have... the only cure is to knock yourself out with beer, so your foot won't go crazy.

problems with / torn floormats or aftermarket pedals can and do create this scary situation.
a local guy here almost fried his motor this way... didnt think to shut it off and it kept bouncing off the limiter for a minute ... doh

I had the floormat problem in my 6th-gen Civic coupe. They recalled it, drilled a little hole in the mat, and put a peg in there so it wouldn't move.

Throttle cable too tight could cause the return spring to stick (don't ask how i know). The floor mats could have caused it.
any number of things really.

good points guys, I'll go check the mats, probably just pull them out and hope it doesn't happen again
Do you have an AEM CAI?
Does it have a Bypass valve?
Yes? They are defective and fall apart. They will break apart and lodge in the intake manifold butterfly. Call an authorized AEM dealer ar AEM.

I have an INJEN CAI, it's actually exposed right now until I get off my lazy *** and put the new wheel well liner in. The other one got caught under the tire and bent in my fender.
that happend to me once... i put on the hazards and pulled into the parking lot in 2nd gear... i turned off the car and pressed the accelerater all the way down and started it back up and it was fine.. scary tho!
yeah a tight throttle cable or loose floor mats could do it, have you by-passed the throttle body coolant lines ?, if so the plate can ice up on you and cause a sticking problem.

Wow something similar happened to me too! I took my foot off the gas but the car kept driving. So I thought why not take my hands off ther steering wheel. Well sure as ****, the car started to steer on its own too! Next thing you know, I'm laying back and the car drove me home! ALL BY ITSELF!

this reminds me to post this...
go over scenarios like this in your head!! that way you will know what you will do and how to react...like your tire falling off....think of which way the car will pull etc...this will make you a much better and more aware driver!! go over any possible situation you could encounter in your car!

If your answer is the 2nd, Then go see if its still there. If its gone its probably in your TB. I had this happen before I was using a cheap filter I had sitting around and the little cap came loose and stuck in the TB, the weird thing was it would come loose then do it again then it wouldnt (Back and forth) I finally found the problem the next morning.
