Default B16 or B18C1?? Wich should I get

Money is obviously an issue but I was wondering why some people choose B16 over GSR? What are the advantages/disadvantages of both? I've had GSR swap before and also LS turbo. Whatever I get wll be N/A and in a EG hatch.

I had a JDM B16 in a hatch and ran a 14.7 stock suspension and stock motor plus my timing was off 2 degrees but idk how much that hurt. I guess it depends on how you drive the b16 doesnt have good torque everyone knows that but when vtec hits it's all good. I say go b16 just cause it's cheaper. my 2 cents.

if you're on a budget, go with a B18B with a B16 tranny. lots more torque than the B16 itself. later on down the road you can save and swap on a vtec head...... but its really up to you and how deep your pockets are. good luck

This is really not a bad way to do it. When I had my B18A and B16 trans, it wasn't too bad. No power above 7000 rpm, but fine for around town.

How much money do you have? Is it Gsr money Or Ls-vtec money ? And I agree, a Ls w/b16 tranny and bolt ons is quite respectable.

I used to have a jdm b18b with GSR tranny, JUN header 2.5" custom exhaust, j's intake and I could take alot of b16s and off the line I would get this guy with a GSR with ITB's and other ish until about 3d gear I'd have him by 2+ cars. I wanted something with vtec since cams etc will be able to go into it right away.. a legit GSR from hmotorsonline.com is like $1000 more then a legit b16 complete swap from the same website.. Is it worth it? or would I be better off investing that $1000 into bolt ons cams/valvetrain and chipped ecu/tuning on VAFC?

well you can look at it like this: $1000 more for 10hp, 13trq, not quite as good a tranny(debatable...longer gears but you can get both with LSD and neither will have the 4.7 final drive), and more displacement. As far as the bolt-ons, wouldn't you do that with either engine or is it that you would just have to wait a bit on the GSR? I would go with the GSR and wait on the bolt-ons. It would still be fast. I know my problem is being patient........instant gratification can cause you not to think things through. Where do you want to be in the long run? What are your goals? That will help you more than any ones opinion on what to get. You could make a list of parts, prices and potential gains for the engines and see what you like best. There are 200whp b16 out there, not many, but far more 200 whp b18c.

Good advice here let me brief you guys on everything. I have about 60% of the money needed to buy a complete b16 changeover from hmotorsonline.com (from a 92-95 SiR-II) without LSD (should I spend the $300 more for LSD?).

My SOHC has alot of miles on it and runs fine but I want to get back into a dual cam ASAP it's been years since I had SOHC.

As far as bolt ons, yes they will both get them but I think the b16 I'll be more likely to do stuff too sooner also seems easier to make my money back on it when I resell this car. B16 complete swap is like 2200 without LSD a swapped hatch in genral goes for 4k a nice one can fetch around 7-8k. B16 seems easy to make money back on esp since I can "build" it. I already have a 2.5" 4-1 JDM ITR header to put on it, ITR intake manifold, ITR throttle body, and as soon as I get the motor I am gunna fab up some 2.5" exhaust similar to the buddy club one that looks like a straight pipe.

I think what I'm asking is, if b18c/1 is so much better why do people even bother to get B16?

I didn't and I regret it. There was a thread on it a while ago, and everyone who didn't get it wished they would have. Hindsight is 20/20.

good point, but look at it at this angle, thats 10hp/13tq you would have to gain on the B16, and you would probably spend 1k just to get that little gain.

i have a GSR hatch w/bolt ons and clutch and its very fun on the street, lots of toque to get up go

Hell you can have my whole car for for $3000
