91LX - What is this thing? Part of air intake system... (pic)
The car in question is a 1991 Accord LX manual coupe.
I recently put an eBay cold air intake into my car. I didn't have any problem with the vacuum hoses but there's one thing I'm not sure about. It has an electrical input and a vacuum tube going to it.
I left it plugged in electrically and the car ran fine. Then I unplugged it earlier today and so far the car has run fine without it and hasn't thrown a CEL.
What is this thing?
As of now, I'm planning on taking it out of the car and putting electrical tape over end of the electrical wire that plugged into it.
Here are the pics:
Pic 1: Out of the car
Pic 2: Installed next to the battery
Pic 3: The wire that plugs into the "unknown thing"
Thanks for any help!

Well i know there's a selenoid inside there, and from what i figured out its some sort of device made to restrict air at low rpm, and allow maximum flow at upper rpm, like an IAB but right next to your air filter.
It is probably designed to maximise fuel economy and reduce noise, so basicly its useless.

Those "damn japs" as you so ignorantly called them
...... knew exactly what they were doing when they put that little solenoid in the car

Exactly. They put that selenoid in because most accord owners are midle aged or old people who are looking for a good relying quiet car that wont burn there budget on gaz. Our accord are not designed to ga fast, they are designed to be confortable. Si if you want to make it go fast, you have to modify its original purpous, that's when you remove the selenoid thignie. I dont see why you would call them "damn japs" knowing they built an excelent car who blew away the competition...
