Default oil in manual transaxle?

Hey guys. I just replaced my clutch and when refilling my transaxle fluid i called up the honda dealership to ask if the honda transaxle fluid was just 90 weight gear oil and the guy said 'no no no... you don't want to use 90 weight... it'll make shifting really hard.' So he said to use regular 10-30 weight motor oil. But i'm still skeptical because i know what i drained was gear oil... no other oil smells like gear oil.

Opinions?

whaaaat you went to a dealer and they didn't try to sell you Honda MTF? That's quite surprising.

Use Honda MTF, or GM Synchromesh Friction Modified (if you want to spend ~$9/qt.). I run the latter, and I absolutely love it.

Ya, Honda MTF, takes about 2.4 quarts and is $3.75 a quart at my local Honda dlr.

hahaha It's funny how this topic always pop up. PENZOIL SYNCHROMESH... same **** as GM synchromesh & wont cost you as much.

Buy GM sychromesh if you are skeptical and have lots of money.

i called up my local acura dealership and he said unless they specify that they want honda mtf back in, they just put non synthetic 10w30 in. you should be fine with the oil. i just switched to honda mtf after about 1.5 years of driving on oil and it made a huge diffence in the shifter feel....its smoother now. BTW you transmission on a fill up normally takes 2-2.3 qts depending on how much was drained.

It is NOT the same as GM Synchromesh Friction Modified, which is what I've been using for over 60K miles now.

I'm willing to bet there aren't too many people if any who have run this fluid in a Honda as long as I have.

It will be okay as long as you don't use synthetic motor oil. Okay, as in, there is other stuff that would be better (MTF, Synchromesh, etc.).

We've argued about this in the past and there is no use argueing again. Think what you wanna think. Spend more money, I don't care.

Do a search on this subject!! It's been covered.

It will work (conventional, NOT synthetic), but other things are better, as mentioned above.

Use Honda unless you have a hard time shifting, then switch to Syncromesh.

Redline is another brand, but I haven't heard much about it myself.

Dumped my synccromesh FM (had for 19k) and went back to OEM... feels the SAME, but I dont get a "slipping/squeeking" sound anymore if i launch hard.

Yay to OEM fluid, but whatever... I have used everything now and even regular 10w30 seemed fine.

... don't put motor oil in your tranny.

the synchros are cheap enough as it is.

don't encourage their breakdown.
