96 accord cel code 80..exhaust gas recirculation????wth?
80 Exhaust Gas Recirculation insufficient flow detected
yeah..thats what i get.
8 long flashes. what the heck does that mean?
and i did search..didnt find much. fw190bvi had a lil thing on it.. but ti didnt seem to be my prob..
help, anyone?

i was hopin you'd reply p adams..always have good info.
so, im gonna go ahead and be a noob and ask how to go about fixing this? cause i dunno how, though i will check into it later tonight and find out specifics.
though, what will this do to my cafr? it seems to be running fine:idle's fine and gas mileage is wonderful. so what will happen and how critical is this to fix?

I'll see if I can come up with a service proceedure (diagnostic trouble tree) for you. I won't be home 'till later, so if deserthonda or hondatechpro wander thru, perhaps they'll lend a suggestion or two. I'll check in when i get in and see how the discussions' going.
Surprisingly, egr failure (or substandard operation) does little to effect engine operation either good or bad. It normally operates only during part throttle operation (never at idle or a WOT). It's only function is to control pollutants known as oxides of nitrogen. (nox), and as such is emissions testing critical.

I've been beating up on some of my reference matarial for a test proceedure for the egr, but as yet have'nt had any luck.
8:10 chances you've got a build up of carbon in either the egr base, or the passages which run to it.; and having a look-see might be worth your time. It will only cost you the price of an egr base gasket and your time.
Here we go, I found it.
There is both a hose and a wiring connector to the egr valve. The hose to supply the vacume to operate it; coming from the egr solenoid, and the wiring to the "lift Sensor" to verify operation (and tie into the PCM ). Make sure they are attached.
Testing the egr function is with a hand held vacume pump using 8" of vacume, you're looking for the rpm to drop about 100rpm. If it does, the egr (itself) is working, if it doesn't; suspect it's blocked.
let's see what happens

Part throttle operation is what is going on probably over 95% of the time a car is being driven. So your saying it only works most of the time. I gained 4 MPG by unclogging my EGR ports two weeks ago. I have also, as with many topics, read different pros and cons on this subject but, my personal experience was increased gas mileage and reduced pinging. I agree that, from a driveability standpoint, it does not effect performance. It has to, however, effect what the O2 sensor sees which may account for the increased efficiency I experienced.

thanks alot guys.
ill check this out this weekend and letcha know what I find and if the prob gets fixed.
but just a note.. my gas mileage has NOT been affected. in fact, i've gotten the best mileage ever this weekend. so, at least for now, gas is still good.. hey.. maybe i'll get even better if this is the prob?
i'll keep ya posted. thanks again P and amckee

i just bought an a 97 accord this weekend that was throwing the same code
egr valve insufficent flow
so while i was changing the oil i took the battery cables off and took off the egr valve to clean it
after spraying a substantial amount of carb cleaner and letting it soak in
i put the valve back on
once i restarted the car the code was off
but 150 miles down the road the code came back on
and my egr valve still has alot of carbon build up
so im probaly just gonna get a used valve for it
hope that helps

Re-occuring carbon build-up is not an indication of a bad EGR value. You've also got a built-up inside the passages to the EGR which may be harboring more carbon.
There should be a thread around here somewhere about cleaning those &^*^$ (said with great fondness)

success!!!!!
even though i really didnt know what i was doin..and i was goinfrom my memory from the lil article i read on cleanin the EGR ports..it worked. my actually cranked up!!
:O
i used a little pick and a vaccum to suck up the broken particles of stuff..disconnected the batt for abotu 10 mins to the puter would reset:it idles kinda rough for a tiny lil bit (not even a min) and no CEL
gotta thank P_Adams, ci3r and amckee for your imput. you helped get rid the of the evil CEL of death.
thanks!!

hey how long did that take you man? I've been thinking about checking the ports on my car cuz something is cutting into the gas mileage.
ehh.. maybe 45 min to 1hr.. i took my time and was talkin and messin round too. very easy. and so far, still no CEL light so that must have been it.
Here's an awesome write up by the way http://home.comcast.net/~em-engineering/T2T013.pdf
So it took you an hour to disattach the fuel rail and clean it up, or did you just check the EGR valve?
*and dammit its hart to type!!! I cut off the tip of my f*cking fingwr saturday with a hedge trimmer, its a long stupid story but at least the ER nurse was hot.
