Default Have you ever had a car shipped? Very bad experience with my '79 Civic!

I got the car on Saturday. It was a very, very annoying experience. Long post, please bear with me!

The truck driver was a total ***!! Just completely inconsiderate and a complete inconvenience.

He, or a representative was supposed to call me 24 hours in advance to schedule a delivery time.

I hadn't heard anything since Wednesday; I got a call that day from Valerie (a representative of the agency) saying that a driver had picked up the car and that they would be back in contact with me to schedule a delivery date. I assumed the car was still in transit, and everything was going A-Okay.

Well Saturday morning, I got a call around 9:30am. It was the truck driver and he said "Jonathan, I'm about 2 hours away. I have your Honda Civic and you need to make arrangements for the delivery"

I'm very confused at this point and wondering how he got as close to 2 hours away without ever making contact with me. I said "Why didn't you call me 24 hours in advance, like you were supposed to, so I could schedule a delivery time?" to which is response was "I had a tire blowout in Laredo, TX; I would have been in Dallas on Friday otherwise."

Well, I don't understand WHAT in the world that has to do with calling me ahead of time and letting me know what's going on, but okay. This is extremely annoying because the driver is not following protocol.

So I go back and forth with him on the phone for about an hour. I tell him that I'm not at my house, I'm about an hour away and I won't be able to meet him until around Noon. Well, that apparently pissed him off. He said, and I quote.... "That won't work. You need to get the car now. I have other deliveries. If you don't get it now I'm going to go make my other deliveries"

Now, if this had happened...he would have left my car at a storage facility of his choice, the bill having to be paid in full by me before I could get my car. I would have to pay this place not only the shipping charges, but a 'storage' fee, which, from what I understand, is around $150 per DAY.

By this point I really didn't know what to do. It was around 11am, and I needed to come up with $500 cash in the next few minutes or I was really going to be screwed. I was planning on getting the money the day he called to schedule a time, but since he didn't do that, I didn't have any cash on me. I guess he expected me to just be walking around on the street with my pockets full of cash?

So I tell him I'm going to call him back while I figure out what I'm going to do. At this point he tells me he can't find the address on the map, and that I'd have to give him directions. What kind of truck driver needs directions to perhaps the busiest intersection on one of the major highways of the city? Mind you, this guy is based out of DFW, so he should be at least SOMEWHAT familiar with the area.

In the meantime I borrow $500 from my brothers account through the ATM at my bank and start driving to my work, which is where the car is supposed to be delivered. I call him back and let him know I'll be at my work in around 10 minutes.

This is where I get really mad. He goes on to tell me that I "took too long" to call him back so he skipped my delivery and is already on his way to his next stop. What the crap?!? I'm so pissed at this point I barely can think of the right words to say to him. After arguing with him for about 5 minutes, and worried about losing my car to this idiot driver, I decide to cut my losses and I tell him I'll just meet him wherever he's at. He laughs and says "The car does not run, what are you going to do with it? Push it to your work?" Well, I think I know the car doesn't run...afterall, I did buy it. I told him I'll have some friends help me get it to my work. He chuckles at the situation as if it's a stupid idea. Then he thinks about it for a minute and, I guess decided he wanted his $500 cash right then because he agrees to it. He tells me where he is, and I say I'll be right there. Turns out he's around 8-9 miles away from my work.

By this time, it's around 11:30 and we're 25 minutes from my house; I needed to be at work by 1. I still haven't showered, I don't have my work clothes. Nothing...

So I finally meet the guy at a parking lot attached to a Dr's office. Great. The car doesn't run, and he's going to leave it here. Just what I need....my car towed! Thankfully, it's Saturday so nobody is there, but still. It's generally annoying.

I give the guy his $500 so I can get my freakin car, sign his stupid paper and he's gone in the blink of an eye. I'm trying to figure out what what he was in such a rush for because he only had one other car on his entire stupid truck. Some stupid Camry. The guy acted like he was in a rush to save the world when i was speaking to him over the phone. Seems kind of hypocritical that the guy is rushing to make this one delivery in a timely manner while being such a jerk and a huge inconvenience to me at the same time.

Anyway...I push the car into a parking spot, lock it, and rush to my house to get a tow strap and my (dirty...since I didn't have time to wash them that morning) work clothes. I call my friend up and we drive back out to the car. He's got a '91 Civic STD that we pulled it with. We pulled it to my work and parked it. Then he drove me back out to my car at the Dr's office and headed back to work. I got back to work exactly at 1pm and it was all settled. I was just glad to have the car safely at my work and be at work on time, even if my morning and my shipping experience was completely ruined.

The car is here...the car is fine. I really like it. I couldn't be happier with it, but I just can't get over what a bad shipping experience that was!

I've dealt with transporters in the past and I've never had this kind of trouble. They've always been very friendly and helpful/understanding about meeting times and places.

I'm going to call the agency and complain, just to let them know not to use that driver in the future if they're going to outsource when transporting. They may not care, though, because they got their $150 fee a week ago. But they still may appreciate a heads up.

I shipped my EF hatch from Hawaii to California with no problems. Everyone was very friendly and treated me with respect, well except for the guy who announced that he brought my "red rocket" around the front. But aside from that, i had a great experience. They didnt even drive my car 1/4 of a mile. Not a scratch.
