Default headlights won't work (sometimes)

ok so last night i was at work and i got into my car and started it.. everything started just fine, but i went to turn on my headlights and they didn't turn on at all. the headlights didn't come on, tail lights, guage cluster lights, interior lighting, and license plate frame lights didn't come on and the clock didn't dim.. i turned the car off and pulled the cover underneath the steering wheel where the fuses are.. i looked at it and didn't mess with anything.. i just waited a second and then switched on my lights and they came on and everything was fine..

later that night i was at my friends and i was getting ready to leave. i started the car and tried to turn on the lights and they didn't come on again.. same situation with none of the lights coming on at all. i tried flipping the little switch on and off and nothing happened. finally i stuck my hand down and pushed all the fuses in a little tighter and started my car.. i flipped the switch and the lights came on. i drove home and when i got into my driveway i turned the car off and i turned the lights off. i turned them back on and they came on again.. i turned them off and on a few times and they worked all the time..

finally.. tonight i get into my car leaving a friends place and the lights wouldn't come on again! i flipped the switch on and off a lot of times and no luck. i pushed the fuses in and everything and tried turning the lights on but no luck. i sat pushing the fueses turning the switch for the lights on and off a bunch of times and no luck.. i turned the car off turned it on jiggled the fuses more and still the lights would not come on. finally over time maybe 15 mins the lights finally came on.. i don't know what tricked them to come on. when i got back here i messed with the lights again.. i turned them on and off a few times and they still worked. i am completely stumped. it seems if it was a fuse only one part of the lights wouldn't work, but the cluster would still light up and the tail lights and what not.

does anyone have any ideas?? this problem seems to keep getting worse and worse.. any help at all would be great! thanks

The contacts in your column are known to go bad. that would involve replacing your column instruments. Another problem that is common is the ground box for the system.

now the headlights will turn on and off sometimes by themselves after i get them to work.. before if i got them to work they would work, but now they'll have a mind of their own.

i noticed in the fuse area all the wrong fuses were in there.. they were mostly 30 and i know 10's are supposed to be in there.. i changed the fuses back to what they're supposed to be, but i don't know if this could have damaged something??

youll have to chase the wires down and see where they lose voltage.Having bigger fuses can smoke your wires if theres a problem.

If you have an aftermarket radio I would check the dimmer wire that went to the factory radio. It's black with a red stripe.

If not that I would check the headlight switch.

switch iin the column, check all wiring from the switch all the way down to the fuses, pull fuse and check as well. maybe corroded and the contact isnt good.

i know the fuses are good.. i took off the cover to the ignition and the switch and the plug into it looks alright.. the wires from there don't look like there should be any problem..
