SOHC V-Tec vs. DOHC V-Tec
As I said before I'm looking to buy a Del Sol the V-Tec model. I want the DOHC model b/c its 160HP. The SOHC model is only 125 I believe, but what is the difference btw the motors, is there any difference, besides the Cams? Thanks again for the help.
just about everyone is going to flame you because this is a question that gets asked so much and can easily be found without posting. you can easily find the answers to most of your questions by searching the H-T archives. Also right at the top of the 92-00 civic forum there are stickies and one is an FAQ. there are alot of common posts in there so dont forget to check those out if you have a question. i found this post about d-series engines.
https://honda-tech.com/zero...33126
the del sol si has the d16z6 SOHC with VTEC 125hp and 106tq and 9.2:1 compression
as for the b-series...the del sol vtec has the b16a3 which is DOHC with VTEC. 160hp and 111tq redlines at 8200rpm. 10.2:1 compression
so basically they are both 1.6L 4cylinders with vtec other than that there are many differences
here is another site i found using google that has all the basic honda/acura engine specs http://www.streettuners.com/cu....html
hope this helps and next time search

lmao, /yourself ... but yeah as for your question they are like everyone said totally different engins which is the logical reasoning one creates more horsepower than the other... but yeah you could always turbo the D

I'll try to help.
The D16Z6 engine is the 125hp SOHC VTEC engine found in the Del Sol Si.
It has the same displacement of 1.6L (actually like 1595cc) as the B16A, but that's about the only thing in common with a B16A.
The D16Z6 is physically smaller due to the SOHC configuration, and the "VTEC" is uses is kind of like a "half VTEC" because it only uses VTEC on the intake side of the head as oppsoed to the full VTEC of a B16A which uses VTEC on intake and exhaust sides of the head.
The D16Z6 is a great engine - don't let any tell you otherwise. However it takes some serious work to get one to perform like the B16A because the B16A is just a better design and it not only makes more power, but it revs higher and can last longer doing so because it has a more reliable bottom end due to it's lesser stroke.
"Lesser stroke? I thought you just said both engines have the same 1595cc/1.6L displacement?"
True, but the engines get that 1.6L totally different.
The SOHC uses smaller bore (75mm), but longer stroke (90mm), which is not as good in terms of high rpm durability when compared to the B16A which uses less stroke and larger bore cylinders to get it's 1.6L.
Again this is comparitively speaking, meaning that the D16Z6 is by no means unreliable just because the B16A's bottom end is more reliable. It just means that if driven at their redlines on a daily basis I'd expect the B16A to last longer, but the D16Z6 will still take a ton of punishment before you get problems.
Also important to know is that the transmissions for each are 100% totally different and not interchangable, as well as the axles, a few of the mounts, the shift linkages, and a few other odds and ends.
Bottom line?
What price difference are you finding for the VTEC and Si models?
You could always buy the base model "S" verison with it's 1.5L 102hp non-VTEC SOHC for dirt-*** cheap and drop whatever DOHC VTEC engine you want with the money saved.
BTW lastly to all the flaming *********:
Chill out. Did you guys know everything when you started here? The guy has a legit Q, even if it should havce been researched, but it's still legit.

Get the b16 motor. you will be alot happier. trust me, My brother bought a a 93 del sol with the d16 and it just seems like a waste to do anything to the motor know that there will always be missing 30 hp

think about it this way man you can spend 3k on a d16 sold or spend 4500k on a b16 one and have 160hp turbo the d16 with the extra 1500 you saved and make 230 hp daily driven thats better than an h22 gsr ls/vtec. But in the long run if your thinking about hittin 8s or 9s maybe 10s it will be hard to get a d to do that. there easy to make go 13s or 12s but farther than that you will need alot of ****. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1356768
EDIT:
The reason why this thread is pointless is because it's a difference of opinions. It's all up to who wants what. D-Series can run 10's just like B-Series. Over all power down the line won't make a difference if you're doing drag racing or circuit racing. You don't want too much power in a circuit and with drag (as I said before) you're going to run 10's than you will. I mean, I guess the real question is which one has the better valve cover?

$1,500.00 isn't going to buy a turbo set-up that will propell a D16 into the 230whp territory.

Anyway, my ex had a del sol. I honestly can't remember what it was. Not once did I open the hood and I didn't know jack back then. But it felt fast.
