Ultra MDI system!!

I remember Ben @ AJR said it was worth getting...I actually had one but traded it before I had a chance to use it

*** BTW, the Type-R specific MDI unit is the 9680 ***

Digital ignition aka distributor-less ignition. Uses coil packs and the ignition box/amplifier (in the diagram with the heat syncs) to provide spark for the plugs.
Supras, DSM's, and a slough of other engines come with this setup from the factory. I believe the MDI system uses CBR F4i coil packs, as they have the highest spark capacity and quickest recycle rate of any coil packs that I know of. Many Supra owners switch the F4i coil packs because they are half the cost of the Toyota units.
The benefit is there are no distributor bearings/caps/rotors to wear, it runs off of electronic crank signals. I don't know how you change your base timing though, I would figure its easier on a distributor where you can just rotate to find a good base timing. I'm sure the MDI system has some sort of programmability, either laptop or built-in.

I don't think its a "distributorless" ignition, but more of a high discharge dual coil pack.
Notice that there are no individual coil packs associated with "each" of the plug wires.
That said, Steve felt it was worthwhile and might have been good for almost an additional 5 whp.
Additionally, it was supposed to be pretty much plug-n-play.

yeah, im not all to keen on the whole rotor screw setup honda did on their distributors...atleast give us a better locking mechanism

Any added engine management will further increase the accuracy of the ignition system by providing you with extra tunability with your ignition tables.

The MDI is a completely separate system that replacese the mechanical ignition system (distributor) with a digital unit (MDI).
Having control over the ignition tables (ie: Hondata/Crome...etc) gives you further potential to improve your power.
