Short Shifters?
SOrry about posting this twice, i forgot to get the replies e-mailed to me!
Just a quick question. I want to buy a short shifter for my 99 ITR DC2. This guy is telling me that the shifters will suite the normal intergra's and the type R's from 1994-2000. Normal being VTI-R's. Should I trust him? is this true? from my experiance of driving the two cars, they feel like they have different shifters.
The item is listed here at ebay in Australia

THanks!

I would not buy a generic short shifter off of eBay for an ITR.
The ITR shifter is really quite good just as it is, and the shifter's already really rather short just as it is. If the short shifter for the ITR lowers it more, it's really lowering it too much, IMHO.
Also, a short shifter marketed for the entire DC2 line might just be turning a GS-R shifter into an ITR-feeling shifter, so it won't do you any good.
I'd buy a name brand with a proved record, honestly, if I were you. Or I'd forget about shifters and get some good Spoon or Mugen shifter bushings.
But...if you drive on the track a lot you might find yourself going an entirely different route!

from what I hear, that short shifter ***** up ur tranny???
well there's a kid in my class, went through 3 tranny cause of his short shifter....
I don't understand why he doesn't just get rid of it....but I guess he rather spend thousands of $$ to replace that than just to take the damn shifter out.

I liked it on my EG and EK, but would not put one on my ITR. I have heard of numerious people misshifting because the gears feel so close.

In performance driving, you learn to rely on the Honda centre spring and sort of shift off that spring when you're doing it quickly.
If the short shifter adds weight in a way that it reduces the effectiveness of that spring, then you could end up in the wrong gear because the spring isn't guiding you as well.

I tend to agree with George, the stock ITR shifter is a damn nice piece. I got rid of my Skunk 2 and went back to the stocker. I found myself making a lot more shifting errors with the short shifter. Just remember that the faster you shift, the less time the synchros have to do their job, hence quicker wear.

i had one of those ebay shifters on my old integra gsr. Needless to say it snapped, and i had to jack the car up with my car jack and shift it from undernieth my car. Then i creeped home in 2nd gear. Not worth it imo

I gan't find any reason for a "short shifter" for the type-R. It does it so cleanly and precisely completely stock.
If you are looking for a different more direct "feel" maybe try bushings.

Do they still make those? I didn't see them on inlinefour or king motorsports's site. Special order item?

I fitted a buddy club short shifter to my R, it shortened the throw by about 30% i reckon, but i found myself shifting slower with it, i think i was kind of being cautious so as not to mis-shift as the gears were now closer together. In the end up i took it off again and went back to the stock shifter which i much more prefer. My car is daily driven and i really have no need for a short shift, the only reason i bought it was i got it real cheap...i have since sold it for 3 times what it cost me!!!!
