bike sizes for beginners?
hey guys im kinda new to posting but i been around here and there and reading any info i can get but i have a problem. im still younge, well im 16 and right now and have my m2 and have taken your equivilant of the msf course i think(im in canada). for my first bike my parents were very worried so i made a compromise and just got a 125 scooter for one year, well now my time has come to move up and i was really looking forward to getting a 500 of some sort but i have a brother that rides and he does not want me to even think of anything more then a 250 and next year maybe a 500 and so on, i know hes just trying to look out for me but do you think these steps are a little to small plus not practical since i wont get time to get very comfortable with the bike since im gonna be selling one every year for something bigger. sorry for the huge read im just looking for your 2 cents thanks

Sounds like your brother knows what he's talking about. And plus, you can rack on an aweful lot of miles in just 1 year. Just get out there and ride.

Maybe he learned something from that experience and is trying to keep you from making the same mistake.

Fastest guy I know had an EX500 for his first race bike.
Get the 250, learn how to ride properly and smooth then move up to the bikes with more power. Power is worthless if you can't control it.
I still ride my 250 ninja all the time and I am constantly learning something new when I ride that bike. I've learned 100x more on my 250 when compared to my R6. I can't even imagine how horrible of a rider I would be if I started on the R6.

5500 R6 miles
4500 250 Ninja miles
I still love riding the 250. As long as you care about improving your skills more then trying to impress people with your bike you'll have a lot of fun on it.

I also believe the gs500 is air cooled compared to the ex500's liquid.
A used ex250 will be the cheapest and there are tons of spare parts because the bike hasn't changed in so long. They are very easy to work on

Thats the way to go. Refreshig to actually have someone buying a new bike that has no-one to impress and wants a 250.
Stick with it, you will be a better rider in the long run and if it doesn't work out on the bike have less financial commitment.

I have to agree. My first bike was a 600 a long time ago and I didn't ride it near as much as I should simply because I was afraid of it. I got myself into trouble and lowsided it shortly after getting it and it made me skittish for a long time afterwards. Had I started smaller, I would probably be a lot better today.
