Pounding on the dash could very well break the bulbs. But it sounds like you have loose and/or corroded wires.

very common problem on DA's
not the bulbs/fuses

when I had this problem on each of my DA's (3 of them), I took it apart, and cleaned all the connectors/wires.

sometimes this would work, and sometimes it didn't
but common problem

Did you change the bulbs? When i got my DB1 both climate bulbs were burned out and half the cluster ones were too. It's a PITA to change the climate control ones also the cluster. Every time i take the cluster out in either of my G2's i end up scraping my hand up trying to take out the damn speedo cable.

I'm gonna vote for connections being bad. I usually have to pound the left side of the indtrument cluster to get the light that shines on the tach and temp guage needles to light. Also have the problem with the AC light. Usually have to smack the dash above that too.
