autopower material questions: race rollbar (not full cage)
i know dom is more desireable over erw because it is stronger and the tubing is a smaller diameter. i've also heard autopower used to make bars out of chromoly which is even stronger than dom. can anyone offer more insight into the pro/cons of chromoly? what is a reasonable price to pay for chromoly bar in excellent shape?
I forgot more about hondas then you will ever know....

if i am not mistaken, we don't have any options with the autopower for our cars. i got mine from autopower directly, and they said it came only one way. i aksed if i could get the chromoly one, and they said no.
yep, new we can only get erw, but i'm poor and would like to purchase a used bar. in the past, autopower did make bars out of erw, dom, and chromoly.
Autopower dose not make any cages with Chromoly any more. If you are looking for a good deal on a Autopower cage let me know, we carry Autopower.

Remember.. ERW and DOM are the exact same material... the only difference is in the way the cage is constructed (welds)... the construction of the DOM is stronger.. allowing the cage of a 1.5" diameter to be just as strong as an ERW cage of 1.75" diameter. This, in turn is what makes the DOM cage lighter... not the fact that the material itself is lighter.. just the fact that it is less material. Chromoly is a different material with different properties altogether.
What is ERW, DOM and Chrome-Moly?
ERW stands for Electric Resistance Welded. This is a mild steel tubing that started out as a flat sheet of steel, formed into tubing and welded. DOM stands for Drawn Over Mandrel and it is actually ERW tubing that has gone through a second process that shapes and smooths the tubing so that the walls are more uniform. This in turn makes the tubing stronger than the original tubing. Chrome-Moly is an alloy of steel which incorporates both Chromium and Molybdenum in the process. Please don't confuse Chrome-Moly with Chrome finish. All our roll bars are painted Black.
What type of tubing should I use in the manufacture of my roll bar or cage?
The answer to this question is usually found in your rule book. All street roll bars are made with ERW. Most race roll bars and cages are made with ERW tubing unless specified otherwise.
When can DOM tubing be an advantage over ERW?
DOM is a stronger tubing , so some sanctioning bodies allow you to reduce the tubing size of your cage when using DOM compared to ERW. This does not apply to roll bars, only roll cages. This also only applies in certain classes within these racing organizations. Some classes do not allow the use of ERW tubing. DOM, however, is a more expensive tubing, so expect to pay more.

You also can't weld on to Chrome-Moly, so adding stuff later is a no-no. I believe all of the new race roll bars are ERW, while all of the full cages are DOM. I have the ERW roll bar, soon to be replaced with a DOM cage. The weight is very similar, but the ERW tubing is just bigger. That's no big deal for the rear since it's not in your way, but in the front halo, you want small tubes so that they don't take up a lot of space.
yeah yoshi, let's see the pics! Told you that those rear ones were gonna be a PITA...i really need to employ a limber midget for working on the cramped parts of my car.

thanks all! i had already seen the ioportracing site so i know the difference between erw and dom; i also know they only sell erw roll bars now. my question is about chromoly only. i'm thinking that a used chromoly rollbar would be very desireable because it is lighter, has smaller bars and is just as strong as the current erw bars.
another question: are the rear speakers functional with the rollbar?

no because it doesn't fit like it did factory
yes, b/c w/ very little modification, the speaker housing can be made to fit

shi - who didn't put the speaker back in, but will reinstall it this weekend
does anyone have an idea how much weight the chomoly bar saves? ioport says the difference in weight between erw and dom is 0.32lbs/ft. i would guess the full erw rollbar is going to weigh about 5-8lbs more; not a huge difference. it looks like the chromoly weighs about 0.6lbs/ft less than erw; this will add up very quickly, probably 10-16lbs!
do the rear speakers even do anything in an integra?
w/o the rears, sound seems to only come from the left speaker.
w/ the rear, sound seems to come from both left and right speakers.

shi - who usually listens to talk radio so rear speakers shouldn't matter, but likes the rear fill anyways
