Default OT: Another Autotrader scam?

Got this email on my WRX tonight "Hello,

I'm intrested in vehicle pasted in AD.Pls kindly get back to me if still available as state with your last asking price/mileage/present location of it.Thanks,John."

I've seen/heard of the overseas/CC scam, but I haven't seen this one. I'm going to reply but the general format of the email makes me suspicious. Thoughts?

Get those all the time. I like to send them back this message.

Hi,

Thank you for being intrested in my vehicle. Please contact me via the telephone number provided. Unfortunatley I have gotten numerous emails from buyers offering me a cashiers check for over the amount I want. They asked me to cash the check and send them back the remaining balance. It turns out that the check was fake. Please contact me so we may arange to meet in person.

Thank you

They ususally don't respond back

I say cash the check if you think it is real; no crime if you have no idea it is fake.

I'd be careful Dave, last year a friend of mine got something similar to that, he had a "client", ended up being a scam.

I'm not doing a thing until I have a check or cash in my hand and I go to the bank to make sure the funds are good, then and only then will I give up the keys to the car and watch her leave.

I don't know why I can't warm up to the R. Damn good car and runs well.. but it's loud and bright and too much of an attention getter.. And i'm actually out of the phase of wanting people to watch my car go down the road.. That and i'm tired of being pulled over for the simplest crap Expecially since i'm trying to be an officer..

What do you guys think of this one? I responded to the autotrader hint/link thing and this is what the guy emailed me back:

Greetings.........

Thanks for the email. Please I have a client who is very much interested in buying your vehicle. He happened to budget for a car last time and unfortunately it was sold. I have discussed with him and he has agreed that he will be willing to have the vehicle shipped to Canada upon reaching an agreement with you.

Please I have Some Questions to Ask:

1) Is the engine in perfect condition?

2) How often do you service the car?

3) How many miles on the car now?

4) Are you the owners?

5) If yes, for how long did you use car?

6) Has the car been involve in an auto accident?

7) Any mechanical problems with the car?

8) Why are you selling the car?

Finally At what price are you willing to sell this Vehicle to Us ...

I look forward to receiving your email as soon as posible

Below is our home address

And he even included the address. Seems like a real interest but again it says client? What do you guys think?

I dont know about that one either, sounds a little sketchy but you never really know until your screwed so I would just be extremely careful not that you aren't now.

I just put the caveat on anything that I'm selling (ebay, Craigslist) that I will not ship outside of the 50 states, and usually the scammer emails stay to a minimum. But those scams must work otherwise they wouldn't keep doing them, because there are warnings up all over websites now telling people to be weary. I guess people get so desperate to sell something they don't think twice.

Here's another email I just got this morning:

Dave,
Great...,I have to stop the order I have already made. I sent payment for Another Vehicle But for the fact that yours is cheaper, has a lower mileage and more options .I decided that I go for yours and offset shipping expenses and other commission charges with the difference. This is to say that I accept your price of $17,000

As soon as I got your acceptance with the required payment information I will go ahead to terminate transaction with the former seller. I have already discussed that with him before writing you and he accepted on one condition, that he will deduct $150 from the initial payment of $26,880 sent to him. He informed me as well that due to company policy and book keeping, this refund payment can only be made out in one whole amount, because the company policy only allows a refund payment in one cashier check, so I has to instruct for the check payment to be drawn to you. So that shouldn't be any problem.

All! You have to do is when you receive payment, you deduct your the price of your vehicle and send the difference for shipment.
So send me an email confirming your acceptance to my offer with the following payment information - (1) Full Name,(2) Address for delivery of payment.

Personal information.
I'm a Canadian citizen based in London, I a have 2yrs contract with British Airways but my wife and my child are there in Qc.

And then he gives me his address.....Hrm should I contact british airways to see if this guy works for them.

Sounds like a scam to me. I stay away from any payment made by cashier's checks, I was under the impression that the scammers always use cashier's checks that look real and deposit into bank accounts but trouble comes up later with them when its already to late

http://washingtondc.craigslist....html

This is the local craigslist link that describes some of the scams that are running now...I would take a quick glance at it.

I'm thinking I may send him a reply with something to the effect of I can only accept blah and not return blah amount deducted. If you can send total amount requested and if/when the check clears I'll send/ship the car. Thanks for the link. I'll be reading it.

dave b. its a scam that guy was contacing me like crazy with the same BS line. he sent me emails and left voice mails. its all a big scam. dont fall for it. as soon as i called him out on it he stopped calling and emailing me. rule of thumb if it seems sketchy then it is. so dont fall for it. also just becaust the check clears doesnt mean you wont get fucked. it takes up to two weeks before it actually is verified from the bank the actual check came from. and by that point you might be out of a car and 10 g's or whatever.

I just sent him an email stating that he needs to get the refund himself and then once he has all 17k in his hand then to contact me and we can then arrange everything. Let's see if he contacts me back. Some of these people must think we are stupid. Thanks for the heads up on dude.

ya no problem i worked at a shop for awhile. kids would always come in saying they got double of what they sold there rims for and they were going to keep the extra money. so i have seen many people get scammed by these kind of things. just trust your gut feelings

Yeah, it's such BS trying try to sell things. Why can't it just be easy and someone flies here, looks at car and make purchase. That's how my transaction went with hecklervtec when I bought my other R. Simple and easy.

Play with them. I tell them I have drugs stashed in various compartments throughout the car and the Feds are pretty hot on my tail....so I'm eager to get rid of the evidence...I mean car.

I even told one scammer that an Acura dealership offered me 40k for my ITR and he upped his bid to 43,000. Amazing.

When they ask how many miles are on the car, I tell them I recently took a drive to south africa and put around 10k on the car during the trip.

It's a challenge to see how outrageous you can get and still get back a response
