Default Confused....

I was driving home the other day and car starts to spit and sputter very slightly. I keep going, then it starts to spit and sputer worse, after about 5 min it completely dies.

My fuel gauge was verry low, so I just thought I was out of gas. I had a buddy bring me up a 1 gallon, still no start. I get towed the next day back to my shop and start trinkering with things.

Now the fuel pump doesent 'sound' right. I have the rear interior stripped so I usualy can hear the pump 'wooring away'. The pump now sounds very weak and hesitant.

I started by testing fuel pressure, it was a titch high (B&M sucks) so I adjusted it back to 39psi, just a hair under spec, so I have fuel pressure for sure. I then replaced the fuel filter. After that I tested my fuel pump kill switch, perfect olm (sp?) through the switch, re-wired it for the hell of it.

I then tried to start the car, it starts. I dont know what the hell I just did to fix the car , and now its running rich.

I dont think it's the main relay, because I had fuel prime the whole time the car wouldnt start, but this is when the fuel pump started 'sounding weird'.

I have no idea wtf?

Just an FYI.....these in tank pumps need to be submerged in fuel to cool them. run your tank frequently to almost empty and you are slowly killing your fuel pump.

Oh snaps. I usualy dont fill up all the way. I work very close to my house, so every other day or two I'll just put like $5 in it (not much now). I really do think t he fuel pump is going bad, but what would cause the rich condition?

Rich no.......output would likely fall off when its failing. It sounds like a bit too much fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Maybe a regulator misadjusted of going bad? I know you adjusted it but can you see what its doing at speed?

Even in arid climates at night you would get condensation forming in the tank when you keep it that low. Damp climates are obviously worse.

I can hook the fuel pressure gauge tommrow, tape it to the windshield and take it for a drive. I looked up the fuel pressure specs in mitchel and it said 35-41PSI @ idle. I couldn't find anything else about correct pressures. Any idea on correct pressure while driving, or RPM change?
