Question about vtecs - Searched.
Hey guys, i have a question about vtecs.
Basically, my friend has a mazda mx-3 gs with a KLZE JDM motor swapped into it - this thing is damn quick for its 210hps and 200ft/lbs of torque.
After mentioning to him that i plan to put a vtec on my h23 in my gsr, he kind of scoffed it as if a lot of cars actually come with vtec's already, they just dont name them the same or put as much hype about them. for example, he stated that he has a vtec in his engine as its only variable cams.
first off, is this true that a lot of cars come stock with vtecs and for some reason the honda world puts way to much trust into them? for example, thinks they are faster than they really are?
Is the vtec anything really to fawn about cause it seems to me that if he is right, its not all that special to have a vtec...???
thanks

vtec allows you to have a high output engine with a smooth idle and good gas mileage.
Its not really a "performance" part.
A non-vtec motor can be built with the same performance of a vtec version... but it will idle like crap and have a whacked low-end... will eat gas and wear out alot faster if used for daily driving.

vtec is the ability to change the cam profile. a small profile or came lobe for better gas millages and better low and power and a bigger profile for more top end power
there are also different types such as the economy vtec e found in the accord k24's and civic si's k20a2 which is aimed more for econommy and less for performance
and no if its vtec does not mean its fast
and yes a lot of cars have it. almost all honda's have them for 2006 models. and most other companies have it. they just name it differently. mitsu's mivec, toyota's vvtli, fords ztec and so on
the only factor for a car to be fast is power to weight ratio and gearing. and most honda's will have crap power to weight unless boosted
