Help blew diff out of GF's GSR at track
Here's the dilemma...
I was at the track racing my gf's gsr (with permission lol she's still learning) I went to launch the car and 'POP' and a grinding noise and car won't move in any gear.
Apparently it didn't like a 5500 launch on sticky tires.
Does it sound like I broke the input shaft or the ring gear or the whole diff?
Tranny was making what sounded like a bearing noise when not in gear with clutch off for the last 2k miles. Pressing the clutch in would make it quiet. Car has 156,000 hard miles on original trans. 8k on new exedy stage one street disc and new surface on clutchmasters aluminum flywheel.
What should I do now for a tranny. Car is a daily driver in the summer and goes atleast 50miles a day on the highway so not sure if we want to go to a jdm type r trans.
Car is going to remain all motor w/ goals of running in the mid 13's NA next summer.
What difference would it make to go from a gsr to a b16 or type r trans on the 1/4. Definately want to go w/ a lsd.
How much would it run $wise to rebuild the gsr trans and swap out the ring gear and lsd? or would it be better to just buy a used jdm trans.
thanks and sorry for how long of a topic

my gs-r's tranny is makin the same noise with clutch out, pushing clutch in makes it go away. mine has 131k and i drove it pretty hard from 96k on. someone told me that it was the input bearing in the tranny.
i got a new usdm type-r tranny im going to throw in next weekend along with race clutch and flywheel. i payed 1550 for it, found it on the forum here. im pretty sure the usdm type r tranny's 5th gear is the same as the gs-r, so it wouldn't be bad for freeway driving. the lower gears are definately shorter tho, and im lookin forward to the LSD.

No. The US ITR tranny has the same ratios as a hydro B16 tranny. All of them are shorter than the GSR ratios. The 98 spec JDM ITR tranny has the same 4th and 5th ratios as a GSR, but it uses a 4.785 final drive instead of a 4.400 which will create a similar effect on cruising rpm's and gas milage.

she's not jdm tho... she's cdm (100%chinese) and hate's being called that (jdmgirl)I'm a lucky guy, especially since she didn't kick my *** for breaking her car at the track and she wasn't even with me that night.
If you guys go to the link on my website in my sig her car is on the page.
So back to the topic what would be the best most cost effective thing to do with my trans dilemma? I've done trannies before (installed 2 phantom grips, 1 '00Si and a h23 prelude, I know they suck but i did it)
the car is strictly street/strip. goals are to run very low 13's on street tires next year all motor.
I've been running the cylinder head dept at a local machine shop and have gotten some pretty good practice on the flow bench plus I do all our in house ceramic coatings (think calico coatings or polydyn) so chances are my hot *** asian chick is going to be rolling around in one ill gsr
so you still never answered the question, are there any more pics?? quit beating around the bush and show us some more bush!
btw tell her to get rid of that ugly *** body kit

It's possible that you just busted a CV joint in one of the axles. Get the car up on jackstands and check out the axles. Test each one from end to end... make sure that spinning the wheel will spin the axle where it goes into the tranny and vice versa. If you grab each end with a hand, you should not be twist the axle; if it's not a solid connection, it's busted.
As for the bearing noise you heard before, that's most likely either your throw-out bearing or your transmission's input shaft bearing (the one in the clutch housing, under all of the gears). If the noise goes away when you put a little pressure on the clutch pedal, it's the throw-out bearing; if it requres you to put the clutch all the way in or most of the way in, it's the input shaft bearing.
BTW... The input shaft bearing is not expensive or hard to replace, but it does require opening the transmission and pulling all of the gears out. The write-up for doing it to a D-series tranny is here: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=596873 (I added my tips on doing it for a B-series a few pages into the thread)
