How to remove some sort of anit-theft device?
I just bought a 96 civic si, under neath the left side of the steering wheel, there is a little slot, where you have to put in a key or else the car won't start, how can I remove this feature, I think it's a waste it's a stock civic no mods nothing friggin tape deck.. I got my insurance to cover me incase it gets stolen which I don't think it will but... how can I get rid of it..., if know one knows what i'm talking about all take a picture of it when I go pick up the car, I'm gonna get a compu-star when I start spending money so right now it's a waste
If its one of those "computer chip" looking type things they are pretty easy to remove. Easiest way is to unscrew it from its current location then follow to where each wire goes. Typically there will be in the neighborhood of about 5 wires. Basically follow them to where they go and cut them off. 2 of the wires will go to the starter wire which will have been cut in half by the installer. After you have cut all the wires from the security device and removed it you should be left with one stock wire that is cut in half. Strip back the insulation, reconnect, and solder and tape. That should be it. Good luck. If this is too hard take it to Circuit City or Best Buy they should be able to remove it for like $10 and it should only take like 5 minutes.
Yeap, the car dealerships put them on the cars because it lowers there insurance. The funny thing is I think they acctually make the car easier to steal. Think about it. You look under the dash all the wires are exposed because the contract installer doing the job is paid per car so he slams them out and does a shitty job. Theres one wire cut in half? Hmm wonder what wire that is? The red wire from the anti theft unit goes to constant. You would still have to know what your doing but I think they make cars easy to hot wire.
Depending on what kind of unit it is, [some are nothing more then a set of 2 wires going to the starter wire, a set for the ign. wire and a set for the fuel pump power wire] called 1, 2 or 3 point immobilizer, [depending on how many "sets" there are] and as ImprtTunr said, all that is done is a "set" of wires are run to the cars starter wire, the starter wire is cut and each end is connected to one of the "immobilizers" "set" of wires the same is done with the ign. wire and the fuel pump power wire, that "opens" all 3 circuits, plugging the "key" into the slot "closes" the circuits, and also like ImprtTunr said, fallow the wires to where they go, find the wire that has been cut, [not hard to tell which ones go together, they will be the same color] remove the "immobilizer" wires, [probably all black] and reconnect the original wires, [this can be a bit of pain as once the "immobilizer" wires have been removed, the stock wire may be too short to easily reconnect, you may have to leave a little of the "immobilizer" wire on one of the stock wires, so it will reach, you will also want to do soldered connections.
There are other types of "immobilizers" most use some kind of "chipped" key, and they will have power wires, for the ["immobilizer"] and they use relays to open circuits, but they still use the same method, cut a stock wire and connect the ends to 2 wires from the "immobilizer" or to 2 wires on a relay controlled by the "immobilizer", the removal is the same, find the cut stock wire, cut the "immobilized wires off and reconnect the stock wire, this type of "immobilizer" will also have power and ground wires going to it, same thing fallow and remove from where connected, [ they will just be tagged into a power and ground, no stock wire cut, the ground may just be grounded to the chassis.
Also as mentioned, if you are not comfortable with the wiring in your car, or you can't solder, pay someone
