Default Maximum speed question

Hi guys,

First post and probably not the best subject to establish any credibility but I was curious so here it is.

I recently got a 95 Honda Accord LX, which is my first car. Now I've been driving fleet vehicles for a year and I'm generally a sensible driver but I had to find out how fast my new car went. I found a stretch of straight road, about aslong as an air strip (it's right next to one). It's down hill and I made sure no-one was coming.

I floored it. It's an auto transmission so it went almost to the red line before each gear change, but in 4th it stopped dead at 4000 RPM, which was 105 mph. I was simply wondering if this was due to wind resistance or if it was the speed governor. I realise the speed governors are difficult and complicated to remove and have no wish to do so, I'm just curious as I was anticipating a top speed closer to 135 mph.

As a side note, the place I live and work it out on 13 miles of dirt road and this car does better than average out here as I can down shift easily when neccessary (for tight corners or loose gravel). It's also smoother than the trucks we have on all but the big bumps, which I have long since learned to avoid.

Hopefully someone can answer this. Thanks,

Matthias

All 5th gens' have rev limiters which avoid those untimely over-rev problems.
In addition (as has been posted here in other threads) all DX,LX, (and probably SE as well) have speed governors set at aprox. 120 mph. The EX version is (supposedly) unfettered and can kill you even faster.

No idea. I guess just out of curiousity for some, but if you're not on a track or the autobahn (which you rarely see hondas, trust me, and if you do they're in the slow-lane), I don't really see any reason to be going that fast. I mean, if you're not on a track, once you hit around 110 the dotted-lines turn to solid-lines, and ESPECIALLY anything above that is just white-knuckle dangerous stupidity.

Think of what a deer, pothole, possum, armedillo, or even a rabbit or cat or something can do to your car (for instance, cause you to crash and die and total your accord).

Not to mention the bitch slap your girl friend or significant other is going to lay on you after your foray into the world of faster than sanity speeds.

This thread topic has come around so much, that I'm gonna save my responces as Word text files and save myself a bunch 'o typing.

Why were you tihinking 135 though? That is a little hopeful. Is it because the speedo goes up about that high? Just cause big mike jordan had his own line of shoes doesn't mean I can dunk if I wear them

Good luck getting to those speeds on an ex. My LX kinda dies once it hits about 100, its an auto and that is when it shifts into 4th. The car is pretty much useless once it does that. But there is no reason to drive at those speeds anyways.

I don't know if mine has a speed governor or not but I don't think it has the power to get it up to 135. I have floored it on a straight away that was pretty long and it didn't get anywhere close to 130 ro 110 for that matter.

I think it was some loose calculations I did that brought me t o the figure of 135mph.

The speed of the engine (discounting the variance gravity can cause) is directly proportional to the speed of the car in any one gear right?

So for example, in 4th gear of an automatic, imagine the change of 1,000rpm from 2,000 to 3,000 gives you a change in speed of (and this is just an example) 20mph.

So say this is from 55mph @ 2,000rpm to 75mph @ 3,000rpm. Then to work out what you speed would be at the redline (which starts at 6,500rpm) just work from the 3,000rpm point.

To get to 6,500rpm form 3,000rpm is a change of 3,500rpm. So multiply 20mph by 3.5 and you get 70mph right?

75mph + 70mph = 145mph

Now these figures are not all right for my car, but this is how I came to the assumption that it could go around 135mph. What I wasn't doing ofcourse, was taking into consideration wind resistance. I also had no clue that a speed governor was installed and I still don't know which one stopped the car at exactly 4,000rpm @ 105mph.

It was definately not that the speedometer goes up to 140. I've tried Air Jordans and they don't work.

the accord may seem like it was aerodynamic, cause there are certainly more boxy looking things out there.....but the car can only get to roughly 120ish without serious power upgrades (according to GK and urban run an accord in the Honda Challenge)...however the transmission supports up to roughly 200mph on stock diameter wheels

my 92 EX got me to 130, that was right at the end of 4th gear (5spd)
stock 15" rims, everything else stock

and as far as the speedo, i never checked with my accord, but my 94 civic dx is definitely 5mph off, i checked with gps.
i topped it out over the weekend, speedo says 119 when it shuts off, actual speed is 113
my friend with a 93 accord says his speedo is off he thinks too

and my stock accord was a racecar! lol
at least that's how i drove it!

my 91 auto ex wagon went to 125 before i did my swap. now my jdm is limited to about 112-114mph. i seem to only test it when i am listening to some good tunes on the highway. i have only got up to 90mph on city streets.

keep in mind, i got my 92 ex to 130, your 91 was auto, which means you lose more hp through the drivetrain, and it had less crank horsepower, so i don't think 130 or 135 is too outrageous out of a 92 ex, or a 5th gen ex

i must add that my 91 f22a6 made 140 to the crank vs the other f22's in accords which did like 130. not to mention i am on 205/50/16 and car weighing 3300 without me in it. add me and it would be about 3535lbs. tire/wheel size has a lot to do with max speed as well. the 4th gen sedan and coupe are about 500 lighter than my wagon. now a 5th gen wagon, sedan and coupe are even lighter than my wagon.
