Default Valve clearances

I don't know if tighter is better or looser is better. Looser frees up friction that could also free up horsepower.

I don't know the Valve clearances for the TYPE S cams, I've tried the 5th Gen specs and they called tighter clearances than the 4rth gen, any one has any type of specs so I can play with....

I got a weird tapping sound, coming from the head, but my Intake Manifold gasket is leaking. The noise could travels thru any side of the head,( EX. tapping sound is known to leak thru the exhaust manifold )

If you want to be scientifical about it, pull the valve cover while the motor is hot. Measure a few easy to measure rockers then put the cover back on. Divide that # in half (if you're brave or 1/3 to be safe) and use it for your clearance when the motor is cold. The hot motor measurement is when all metal is expanded, giving you the min amt of gap possible.

I dont understand how that is giving you an accurate measurement at all. Maybe if the motor was straight from the factory, but not after 100,000 mi.

I personally would obtain the correct numbers for the type-s valve lash clearance, and stay as close as possible. too large a gap, and the valve is not being used to its full potential. too little, and damage to your valves may occur.

Well, my theory is that if you know the clearance of the cam/rockers when its hot, you don't have to factor in heat expansion when doing them cold and guesstimating how much clearance he can remove over the factory specs. The factory lash specs are basic, safe settings. For less clearance, a little more lift/duration can be had without changing the cams. Nothing too dramatic, but something none the less. Factory clearances are for driving in all weather conditions, from below freezing to 130deg F desert. For performance, a little less clearance may net some gains. Besides, he wants to try different things......

I see what you are saying, but something to remember is if the clearance is too small, the valve wont seat properly, hence not a good seal, and not very good heat dissipation, so the valves will burn and weaken over time.
