NOOBIE ENGINE BUILD IN PROGRESS WRITE UP
hi HT peeps, i picked up a B18C1 with P73's and new OEM belt, a 2000 SI B16 head with one missing spring and no valve cover and intake manifold with throttle body from a 99 SI for $850 (good deal
). this is my first time touching inside of an engine except at the junkyards, so any little, medium or big tips, jigs, recommend me a product/item, anything!!
as for the short block im dont think im going to disassemble it because it was rebuilt, the pistons have very little carbon build up. im just going to clean it up, but i might have to change my mind after i put the block on the engine stand.
alright peeps i know thats a long read but i am going to be taking pictures of every thing and label them so this will be a nice archive for a really nice reference of how things look like, what goes where, useful jigs, what parts to use for poor man's type r, useful tools, big tips and little tips, (sticky yes?
so we can always have the pictures) anything useful of a rebuild/build, but i dont know everything so anything you have to contribute will be appreciated.
thanks peeps
ok finally i got pictures, but i dont know how to post them... so here are links
the head ready to be shipped out to portflow

short block pictures

misc parts

sorry i dont have any more but i'm going to wait until i get all my parts and i'm waiting for the helms manual to get here so i can label everything for HT peeps
see anything wrong with any thing, let me know if you do

so, does any one think i need to rebuild the block? the person i bought it from say it was recently rebuilt and it doesnt look its was running for long. i dont know if i want to mess with the bottom end myself. i might want to get it rebuild by someone else, but i dont think i need rebuild, correct me if im wrong. when i run my fingers along the cylinder walls, i feel like bumps but i think it might just be build up?
yes i did post in all motor thread but i think i'm suppose to post in here

If it was mine i'd probably plastigauge the rod and main bearings to make sure the clearance is good. There are some people out there that dont check that stuff when they put them together. I'd also take a close look at the piston/rod/cylinder on the clean one, looks like it had a blown headgasket. Make sure it hadn't been hydrolocked.
cool thnx man, but i can i tell if its been hydrolocked? i can turn it pretty easy if thats what you mean. damnit more work, oh well i guess i can disassemble the block and have some one hone the cylinder walls for me, or is that nessecory? damnit when are my helm manuals gonna get here!!!
oh btw which cylinder did you notice there was a problem?

the pistons that look clean; that means water went through there.
vapor steam cleans combustion chambers.
If your going to rebuild your block yourself do it right the first time.
your going to have to spend some money on tools.
bore gauges, stretch gauge, micrometers, torque wrenches...

yah i have a list of tools i need to buy, i decided i'm just going to do it myself. but some PMed me and told me i might want to check to see if the block is warped. does anyone know where in sacramento, ca i can get this done at? i've been to and called some machine shops, i have a feeling i dont want to take it there.
