I've got $11,000 to spend? What too buy?
Hello everyone nice too meet you. I'm in college and I have no car, so I have taken a small loan of about 5600 dollars along with the 5600 in financial aid(free) that I get, which gives me a little over 11 grand to spend on a vehicle.
I'm loooking to buy a Honda-Acura(for reliability). I'm looking to get a car and then build it to where it is capable of a high to mid 13 second quarter mile daily driven. Im trying to figure out what my best option would be. It has to pass California Smog.
If you had 11 grand to spend what Car/Engine/Mods Combination would you buy?
Im thinking a 1995 honda civic HB with a type R motor, or maybe an H22. I will be paying a Mechanic here in cali to do the swap. I would like to retain my Air conditioning though. Thanks for any input.

i would buy an eg or ek hatch and pust a K20a2 in it...getting smog legal on that might be little trouble though..but its possible. You'll just have to get the fuel system from an RSX. But, if you put this motor in a hatch, you'll easily be running 13s, probably 12s if you have a good suspension setup. I would try and do the work yourself though..itll save you a lot of money. If you do a K20 swap yourself, itll run you about 7 grand, and you can get a hatch for around 3, so thats 10 grand for a badass car. For more info, go to http://www.K20a.org

if you want it to pass smog, you will not be getting a c5 engine. you will be spending tons of money to get it to pass state smog stations.you will have to convert to obd2 aswell. and if you get pulled over and your hood popped , you will have fines you could have used to buy beer. if your college, this is something you do not want to deal with...
like luser said,,, buy a beater, save the money, and when you graduate, you can use the money saved to pay your student loans which for some reason everyone seems to have.
if your smart like me, you can leave college with no debts and still have money to buy that dream car when you graduate.
but as with most college folks nobody listens until its too late....
also college and a nice car do not mix... your car will get stolen... besides, the point is to look cool and a graduate of college , and not a student and looking cool driving around the campus....
good luck

gsr swap (including everything) - $4000
MONSTER gt35r turbo kit - whatever you've got left!

Sounds like a much better investment than a car.

I understand exactly what your talking about, but it does not apply to me. I do not attend a Campus. I take my college courses Online. So I never have to leave my home for class, or have to leave my car anywhere besides my drive way here in the middle of the desert. I do not live in a big town. It is very BumFucked, out in the middle of the desert NO crime.
But that sucks about the C5 not passing smog, Is the EK version civics Obd2? If so wouldnt that work? Thanks for your reply.

so yer gonna get an EG?
jumping in debt sucks. but if you were to get ANY swap now...go for the K. those motors are just gonna take over anyway.
and i have a h22 in my EK and im telling you to go K.
eg +k20 and then you might have a little left over for some coilovers or something. then rims can come later on down the line. and dont get some 7"wide rims. bleh. at least get it a little wider

Seriously, use it for books and school. A car is the worst investment ever.

I would buy a 98 Subaru RS maybe for about 6/7,000 (High miles) and then get a JDM Ver 7sti motor for about 3350 and a WRX cross-member. Then spend about 20 too 30 hours wiring( that's not an exaggeration) and slap it all together. You will have a high 12 sec car easy with a fully forged block, so 300HP is just the beginning
That's what I would do with 11 grand

CA smog is only required in certain counties. If you live in the middle of the desert, you may not even have to worry about smog. Definately look into it.
I know my mother didnt have to worry about smog, she lived down in ocatillo near Calexico.

Seriously, Do not use Financial Aid for a car, you can get a much better STABLE interest rate for a car loan. If you use that stupid financial aid, you will be paying for a car for 20 years.... Besides, if you cannot make a car payment, on your own, how are you going to pay for insurance, gas, oil changes, general maintanence, etc.....

I love how people still refer a car to an investment. It is a sink hole, a money pit. You never get what you put into it. An investment, it is certainly not. It is a service that you pay a lot for. A degree, a house, stocks....etc are investments because you plan to get more money out of them then you put in...hopefully.
If you have to buy a car, buy a used civic, don't mod it, and hopefully it won't break on you and won't depreciate that much.
I am in school right now. Buying food seems to be more important to me than putting a blower on my car, but that's just me and my two cents.
