Default Very loose shifter/selector rod ... Tranny bad?

Well I have been working on a little project crx for quite some time now and the last thing I need to do is connect the linkage. The engine is an LS with a y1 cable tranny.
At first I tried cutting a linkage I had laying around and adjusting it to fit the swap but it was extremely loose so I FIGURED I was doing it wrong. So I bought a custom linkage and tried installing it tonight and it is still loose as hell.
I've done a lot of searching and most of the "loose shifter" problems I've seen are related to the bushings or "bitch pin". But my shifter is installed right now with the correct "bitch pin" and it has new urethane bushings, so that's definitely not my problem.
It seems as if the selector pin/rod that goes into the transmission is very loose no matter what gear its in... Even without the linkage hooked up I can put a screwdriver in the rod and twist it left/right while its "in gear". Its my understanding that the Pin/rod isn't supposed to move back and fourth once its in gear am I correct? Is there an internal part on the tranny that can be replaced to fix my problem?
Also, even with the clutch pushed in the tranny seems to be still in gear
I do not know much about transmissions, and this one was purchased from a Honda-tech member a while back (and it took a few MONTHS to get to me) So I'm thinking the tranny might be fu*ked.

Any input is appreciated (unless you are going to say something about the bitch pin or the bushings, because that's not the problem)

Thanks.

Hmmm... you can twist the gear selector while it's in gear? I doubt it should do that but I've never tried it with mine (which is a GSR tranny out of the car now). But... to put it bluntly... if the thing turns but can't select the next gear... then there shouldn't be a problem. I know every pre-OBD tranny I've driven has always had that 'loose' feel to it with a stock shifter... similar to any cable shifter.

Have you tried driving it yet or are you just worried that the tranny is going to make some noises?

Think of it this way.... this is neutral

___ __ __
|__|__|__|
.......O
___ __ __
|__|__|__|

This would be first...

___
|__|__ __
..O.|__|__|
___
|__|__ __
.....|__|__|

The next gear can't be selected just by twisting.... the linkage has to pull the mechanism (the 'O') back before it can go to the next set of selectors (3rd and 4th)
It is locked out. Not sure if this helps at all.

Well I tried driving it today and it wouldn't move anywhere no matter what I did or what gear I tried putting it in, and there is no neutral... I've concluded that I got scammed

I will be taking out the tranny and ripping into it asap to see what is wrong, but for now it's trash.

You'll understand the picture I drew for you once you break the tranny open and look for yourself. The shifter mechanism has several pivot points for the slots and such.

That definately sucks though. Gotta keep moving on.

Thanks man, I'll use it for reference when ripping into the tranny... I wouldn't be suprized if there were parts missing from this POS though, hah.
