Default A/C Belt Tensioner Came Off When Driving

Tonight when I was driving home in the R doing about 80 on the highway normal cruising, all of a sudden I hear a noise like almost like the entire bottom of the car was scraping. The kid next to me looked over like my car was gonna explode. Thankfully I was right at my exit and got off quick and pulled over and shut it off for a minute (wasen't sure what the hell happened.) This noise was LOUD AS *****, but only when the car was on, so I opend the hood with the car on and in the general direction of the A/C belts, I seem somethign out of place right away. The belt tensioner was crooked and definitly didn't look right. Called backup (dad & bro for help and flashlights) and it was that. This thing was almost about to fall right out. And the noise i guess was from it rattling around near everything which made it sound like a LOT worse thankfully, we got it out right there. The bolt that holds this is schered right off. I just had all the belts replaced less than a month ago so i think someone forgot or maybe overtightened this and it broke right off. I'm just glad it wasent something more serious, drove it home and everything was ok. I guess I just glad it wasen't something more serious. I'll be going to the shop that did the belts tomorrow to show them and show some fury. Here's a pic of what exactly came off.

Naw, with no force on the bolt I bet he can get it out with channel-locks or vice grips.

the same thing happened to my 01 gsr and i have seen it happen on many other cars .... you might want to change the idler bearing/pulley if the bearring doesent roll smooth ... the vibration from a bad bearing has been known to cause that bolt to break

That bolt will come out easy enough. It's happened twice to me until I went & bought my own bolt & not that flimsy crap that came on the kaa...

Last time, mine sheared off even with the block - had to use a dremel tool to cut a notch in it for a flat head screw driver to wiggle it out.

Exact same thing happened to me... tensioner bolt broke and the tensioner was rattling around my crank pulley. It destroyed my alternator belt... make sure you guys torque that bolt correctly

mine did it on a trip to Columbia, MO earlier this summer.. horrendous noise, but not a huge problem.. I suspect mine was from overtightening of that bolt by someone as well.. the bolt came right out though.. insert new one, retension, good to go!

The trick is that if it is this common, they should just use a stronger bolt.

That would just make said broken bolt nearly impossible to remove if it snaps off again. I'd reccomend against that. Try a stronger grade bolt, not OE, since that seems to be the problem.
