Default Vibration under braking. Steering rack?

Ok, I know about checking the alignment, checking for warped rotors, bad pads, bad camber, and bad calipers being the issue for this most of the time. However, I feel like if I'm sitting still at a red light (tires = NOT turning) and I turn the wheel, I have a 1/2 inch of play or so before I can feel the wheel actually turning the tires. Has anyone had to replace a steering rack and that be the problem with vibration under braking?

Have you checked your tie rod ends? I had a bad tie rod that gave me those symptoms 2 years ago.

I'm going to try the tie rod ends first as I recall firestone saying that mine were on their way out (not to mention being original with 242Kmiles). However please post a site I can purchase the rack from...

You just might laugh, but I went under my car and realized from the last time I aligned the wheels, I'd forgotten to tighten the locking bolts into place. About 90% of the vibration is gone...

I am truly...TRULY retarded...haha

Maybe the 6 hours from the book is to make you feel better . Dealerships are all a psychological thing. Back when I was working in Canada, I remember going to MB for parts, and talking to a mechanic about why they charge so much/why they keep cars at the dealership for so long before calling up the owner...turns out the $500.00+ you pay for labor, and the day or so your car is gone is just to make you feel better. After all, it's not just a car, it's a benz.
