Default Horrible Whine at 35 - 50 MPH

Lately I have noticed a horrible whining sound coming from the front drivers side of my 01 Prelude. I only notice it between 35 and 50 mph and it is a constant whine. I have never heard anything like it. A gust of wind will change the pitch of the whine. Also as I accelerate the pitch changes. A few months back I heard it at highway speeds and it was extremely loud. That was the only time I heard it at high speeds and it stopped a few seconds after it started. Could it be the axle? The wheel bearing? Its rather loud and at times embarassing when I have passengers. I thought I would post this before taking it to the dealer.

Yep

Brand new tires within the last 6 months. PSI is good.

I once had a little piece of weatherstrip come loose and make a loud vibrating noise when I was on the freeway. You might want to check for that.

I doubt a piece of weatherstrip would cause this kind of whining sound but I guess it doesnt hurt to check.

If its not the tires then check the wheel bearing(spelling?). I know i had a sound like that coming from my rear passanger side tire and it was because my wheel bearings were ****.

I think it has something to do with his tranny.........The gears are worn or something.......

or there's too much backlash in the dif

........does it sound like the whine we get while in reverse? If so....i think one of those could be the problem

I don't know. He said it only happens between 35-50. He didn't say anything about being in a certain gear. And the pitch changes as he accellerates, but it also changes if a gust of wind comes along. Sounds like aerodynamics to me. Or, it could be a tire.

If it were a wheel bearing, it would get louder past 50 mph.

If it were a transmission issue, then it wouldn't have anything to do w/ mph, but rather RPM.

It could also be your new tires. Try switching your front-right and front-left wheels and see if the sound moves to the passenger side. If it does, then it's your f-l tire.

sober, if its a differential or final drive issue inside the tranny it is related to speed, not rpm....

if its related to engine rpm, then it is a single gear problem....or a pilot/throwout bearing problem...

it may be diff bearings or main or countershaft bearings, or wheel bearings....but i have a sound much like that and im almost sure its differential bearings, but we will see,im fixing it within a wek or two....

Gotcha. Wasn't thinking about final drive/diff...

Have you done anything to your car before this started? Headlights, hood, intake, front lip, mud guards, exhaust work, anything at all? ....or hit something?

The whine sounds nothing like when you are in reverse. And the sound is coming from the drivers side. I pretty much ruled out it being a tranny issue but I could be wrong. The sound was there before I replaced the tires but not as bad. It has slowly gotten worse. I replaced the entire exhaust, header, and converter 6 months before the whine came about but doubt that has anything to do with it. I originally thought it was the bearing but since the pitch of the whine changes with a gust of wind I doubt it. Where the sound is coming from its hard to believe it would be aerodynamics but again i could be wrong. No modifications have been done to the body.

If it was the auto tensioner I believe I would hear the whine at an idle but i do not.

I say- check your wheel bearing on the driver's side.
