I just bought a 96 d16y8 w/ecu. I have a 00 hatch, do I need a conversion harness? I also have the vtec engine harness, do I have to run any wires?

 

well, engine harness from 96-00 civics are one peice and you said that you have a vtec harness, mean you have the harness from the D16y8. So can't you just switch over the complete harness when you just swap out the motor. I think that can be done to solve your problem. BUt i'm not 100% sure, since I'm still in the EG time frame.....OBD1 is god

Just buy a 99-00 EX ECU (5-speed) and sell off that 96-98 ECU, because the two have totally different plugs. You can't plug the 96 ECU into the 99 car without an adapter harness.

Also I'd simply add VTEc wires to your existing engine harness rather than trying to swap out harnesses. In fact I don't even think the EX harness will work in your car.

Someone else step in if I've posted wrong about the engine harness deal.
