I've heard this question for nearly two years (since I've been on honda-acura/ honda-tech forums)... I'm sure searches will bring up alot of answers. But from what I've seen, cars that are lowered and/or have the splash guard removed are at the highest risk. I cannot remember seeing any hydrolocks without one of these factors present (with the possible exception of trying to drive through a river. I've been through some pretty nasty rain, including flooding where the water makes the curb level with the street, if you catch my meaning. No problems. But, as others say, there is a chance, and the damage is great. Still I say to the AEM CAI.

Pay attention when you drive in the rain and keep your splashguards on. Steer clear of lakes or rivers. Your car is not a boat. Do all this and you won't hydrolock.

Oh, and the BPV robs more horsepower than you'd think.

If your concerned then get a short ram intake. The performance difference is not too much.

thanx

You should have your splashguard still on, but heck we can't answer this question; go look underneath you car in front of the front right wheel. If there's plastic there that meets with your front bumber and in front of your wheel, then you have your splashguard still on. As for the hp lost from installing the bypass valve, it's about 4 hp.

Snorkel Kit. I know a Hummer that has one and he got like +30 hp from the cold air..

Just kiddin.. If you know the risk is great....like unprotected sex, why do it????

I wasn't that concerned about the AEM. (Partly because I don't drive the R in the rain anyway) I think you'd have to really not be paying attention to hydrolock it. I have an Icebox now, and if you're concerned with hydrolocking with the AEM, I really think it's the way to go.

If you happen to pull into a deep puddle just take your foot off the gas as fast as you can and kill it. Have fun pushing it out to. Dont want to hydro lock so stear clear of water.

Easy fix it to purchase a short ram intake for the winter and install that.

I've heard a couple of people post this idea before. Why? I'm trying to figure the mechanics of winter weather increasing the chance of hydrolock. I don't see snow being a problem. Ice shouldn't be either. What am I missing?

The only way that I believe it could be a problem is if there's freezing rain, which for the rookies is when there's rain and it ends up freezing when it touches the atmosphere. That could cause a nice cone of ice to form around the filter. That or flurries accumulating around the cone and blocking it as well. Don't think ramming the filter into a huge snowbank would be very likely...unless you're "The Plow Man"

Screw that bypass valve. Just cut the piping in the engine bay and place an extra boot where you made the cut. Then when it rains, remove the CA extension from below and put the filter in the engine bay while driving in the rain. This is how mine is setup and have never had a problem.

As for the hp lost from installing the bypass valve, it's about 4 hp.
The power loss is more like 1-2 wHp, no where near 4wHp

I have driven my car thru water high enough to the front plate mounting points with an AEM CAI with bypass installed (VERY light on the gas) and I could literally HEAR the water gurgling in the intake as the bypass valve prevented it from getting to the T/B.
But yes, it is entirely possible to hydro lock with a CAI, the bypass valve will reduce the chances tremendously. Just avoid large puddles and the like, just as said b4. Small splashes and droplets will NOT hydrolock a motor.

P.S. "If you are afraid to hydro lock from a mod, then avoid modifying your car at all, because speed costs $ and there is a down side to everything, so deal with it." -My Momma
