new to pistons (rotor-head) need some advice
I'm probably going to get blasted for asking this but here goes (I did a search but couldn't find what I was looking for). I just sold my beloved rx-7, I've had 11 of them over the years and know every part available for anything I want one to do. However, gas mileage has never been their forte, and they're starting to get pretty old. After much internal confilct, I have decided to part with the rotary for a while. I have always liked the integras, and managed to find a perfect, bone stock, perfectly maintained, all books and records 2000 model gsr with 75k miles. I am a huge gear head, but it has always been directed towards rotarys, so I'm not sure where to start on the integra. I'm not trying to turn the car into a boosted, peaky, riced out, dyno queen, I just want to enhance the already admiral performance of the car. Are their any quirks that I need to be aware of? Is there an exhaust available that has any real performance gain with out sounding like 90% of the riced out pos's I see on the road? Intake? Suspension I can probably handle on my own, but any suggestions would be appreiciated. I see cam gears all over the net, are there any real performance gains from these? Are there any super secret ninja tricks to getting more reliable performance out of these cars that someone would be willing to share with me? Like I said earlier, I'm not trying to go over the top, I just want a little more power than it currently has. Also, does the gsr get the limited slip diff?
Thanks in advance,
Justin

Welcome!!! I'm sure you'll find pistons to be much more admirable than they first appear to be. The vast majority of the information you seek is readily available here on Honda-Tech. There's a very steep learning curve, but once you get the feel of how things go you'll catch on in a hurry. First shreds of knowledge:
1. Most "popular" header brands really suck.
2. 99% of the time, Rota's are good enough.
3. Just because Tein made it, it doesn't mean it's good.
4. If your questions have any remote possibility of being stupid, PM don't post.
5. Alcohol makes this website much more entertaining.

Thanks for the response. I have a pretty good grasp of everything internal combustion related, but as far as knowing how this particular vehicle responds to different mods is basically what I'm looking for. Every type of engine responds to different things, I'm basically looking for some insight to this engine, and to pick up on the abbriviations for different things. It took me 30 minutes of trolling around this forum before I figured out what "ITR" stood for. I thought it was a brand of performance goodies at first.
1. By popular brands of headers, I'm assuming you mean DC sports, mugen, comptech etc. Are there any real performance gains from from a header, or, is it just noise. I know rotaries responded very well to exhaust tuning.
2. By rota's your referring to the brand of wheels right? If not (feel free to blast me) what are they?
3. Never much cared for tein, over priced for what you get, and I've never been sure of the proper pronunciation of tein. ( I won't buy something I can't pronounce)
4. I can handle the onslaught of smart *** remarks if I ask something deserving of such a response, 5 years in the car business has made me pretty thick skinned.
5. Big fan of alcohol!

You will find far superior results with a header like a Mugen header than with a DC. Companies like Mugen, Toda, Hytech, SMSP, RMF, etc have tons of research and development in their headers after creating tons of headers for specific applications. Companies like DC find a design that makes a little bit of power over stock and then mass produce it.
Yes I was referring to Rota wheels.

Man, here there are the good and bad apples. People like Kendall are really helpful (after he gets alittle liqour up in him from my understanding.
)
No reason to be embarassed at all about posting something, don't let any of the (trials) or noobs that use caps get you all butthurt over something.

excellent. Thanks for the info kendall. Is there a forum favorite among the headers you listed, or is it divided by personal preference. Is exhaust a good place to start on these cars, or are there other areas that are best addressed first? Any info is good info I appreciate all of it.

Well what quality of stuff are you looking for?
Here is a really nice site to check if your going to spend some money for quality.
http://www.inlinefour.com
Mugen, Spoon, Toda are all very good brands.
For exhaust, you can go RSR, Greddy, Apexi, I have a brain fart and forgot some.
Another good site to check for the "JDM" **** would be:
http://www.passwordjdm.com
http://www.jdmshit.com
http://www.jhpusa.com
Have fun, check the sites for **** you like and read a bunch.

Thanks for the positive reply. Like I said, i'm pretty thick skinned, I'll ask anything I think is valid. If someone wants to blast me I don't mind at all, I've been known to blast people before too.

I don't know if smog inspection's happen in GA. I am in California, and have to watch what will pass a visual/emissions test. Some of the headers mentioned will not pass this test because they are not carb eo certified.
Each header is going to be designed for getting the air out. Some will be set-up for high end(4-1), and some for mid-high end(4-2-1) performance.
If your looking to get some more power out of the engine, between 10-15hp at most, bolt ons are the best place, cold air intake/header(yes only 1)/cat back exhaust. These will free up the air flow a bit to gain some power through out your powerband.

My pops has a 91 convertible rx-7 with a 13b. He just had the engine rebuilt since the apex seal failed. He added the pinapple racing exhaust ports. I enjoy driving it, but he needs to upgrade his suspension.
Anyways, back to your questions.
Exhaust tuning, yes these engines do perform more with proper air-flow. You can port/polish the head, even upgrade the valve train(valves/springs/retainers/possibly guides) to raise the red-line and add some more aggressive cams to change the air-flow through the valves. This will be the N/A route.
It all depends how far you want to go with the integra.
