So Cal: Will open intake pass smog inspection?
I have comptech ram intake and I have a smog check coming up for my registration. Someone told me that they will automatically fail you if you have an open ram intake when they pop your hood for inspection. Is this true? If so I was thinking about getting the icebox upgrade so it looks more stock.
or
to the open intake on a smog check?

hmm... i'm thinkin if i throw the icebox on it they might not notice. looks pretty stock, except for the polished intake tube. i might swap that tube out for my stock one.
Part of the smog inspection includes a visual inspection. Anything that looks like it's been modified from factory will sound alarms. Not having a filter on your intake arm would qualify. What are you doing without a filter anyway? Crazy!!!

Oh, I took the term "open" ram filter to mean that it doesn't have a filter.... what do you mean by open then? Well, if you still have the filter on it, and the intake system has a CARB OE number, then you should be fine at the smog station.
Sorry about the confusion!

yeah it does come with a carb sticker, but someone told me that doesn't matter if it is an open intake. as far as what i meant about "open" is that it doesn't have a box over the filter. so i was thinking if i added on a icebox it would not be open anymore and therefore pass.

in theroy it should pass either way cause it has a carb eo number, but a lot of shops get really nervous abou that type of stuff, i would try it without first, see if they will smog u, it won't cost u anything cause as soon as they pop the hood it will be either a yeah or nay, and i would go to garden grove they are a little more chill about that ****.

I've had a few techs tell me that you can't have an exposed filter, any exposed filter. I think they're mis-informed, but whatever, they sign the paperwork, not me.
If it really comes down to it, you can always buy/borrow someone's stock filter box and slap it in there.

They will pass you with an aftermarket intake, unless they are TOTAL dicks. Visual failures are usually from headers/missing evap/fuel goodies...
I just passed in L.A. with my ebay shortram and a K&N.

yeah most techs don't really care that much about that little sticker as long as the numbers are fine. a lot of them know that an ebay intake is the same thing as an aem, just 1/10th the price.

Tell that person to STFU. If you have the correct part and sticker for your car/motor, then they wont fail you because of it.
