Default Gear oil question

Ok so i went and saw a mechanic about my 5th gear....not being able to get into 5th, and reverse being REAL hard to get into...he told me "go home and put gear oil into it, So i did that, tonight, and my results were i can get in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th real easy, 5th is still nothing, reverse is a LITTLE better....and my tranny is not really grinding anymore, so my question is, how much gear oil do i need in it, it only took a quart and a half before it started coming back out....the same hole it was goin in....thats what i was told to do....should i go drive my car a little bit to get the gear oil goin in it, or should i just let it idle or, whats up???????

sounds to me if you are having that much trouble with 5th and reverse, its not a fact of tranny fluid, its a problem with the gears themselves. time for a rebuild or replacement in my opinion.

if you are wanting a bandaid, then GM syncromesh will help. but i believe a rebuild is in order.

I just bought this tranny like 3 weeks ago, and i just got my car running monday, drove on it for 4 or 5 days and it just ...i dont know, i was droppin my g.f off and when i got to her house, it drove in 5th and reverse fine, like it normally would, but i left my car idling talking to her for 2 hours, and then when i was leave reverse was hard and didn't go into 5th....so i took it to the shop like i said and thats what they told me....and its a family member mechanic, he owns his own shop....but yea...i dont know...

with the engine stopped does teh transmission go into reverse easy? if it does it might be a problem with the clutch not disengaging all the way. check your floormat to make sure that it is not preventing you from pressing the clutch all the way down

given the new information that wasnt given in the first place.... i agree with bob boberson. also, check your slave cylinder for the clutch, and make sure you arent low or leaking. mine is, and when it gets low, doesnt want to shift all that well. just have to get off my *** and fix it.

gear oil = destroyed tranny, the heavier fluid won't flow enough to properly oil the roller bearings...........

All burnt up.........tossed in the trash..........

if that were the case it would be noisy in all gears not just hard to get into 5th and reverse

6 years ago when i got my first honda.. 95 civic dx coupe i started racing and i heard that u need to change the tranny fluid more often when u race so i went to kragens in riverside and they told me to put 60 wt gear oil in it.. and i didnt know **** at that time and i did it.. well it lead to the input shaft bearing takin a **** and every gear it would only stay in while i was on the gas... as soon as i let off it would pop out... like mista bone said.. gear oil = destroyed tranny.... go to honda get some mtf or if u cant get none just put 5w30
