Nice. Your question makes a lot of sense. Will they let you pass inspection if you have the exhaust or will they let you pass even if you have the cat back...

well it depends on the kind of test. most states now use the OBD test for the OBD2 cars and as lond as your check engine light functions properly and there are are no codes it will pass. also you cant just clear the codes before as it will switch it to the tailpipe test unless a drive cycle has been completed

haha right?
in answer to the original poster:
if you have a cat-back exhaust, you will pass. unless your car is fucked.
if you took the cat out and replaced it w/ a test pipe, chances are you won't pass. I didn't.
If neither of these is your question, I refer you to the quote above

While we are on this subject, will you pass inspection if you have an aftermarket intake that is loud? I have never gotten my car inspected and I don't know what exactly they check.

^^ if his car is OBD0 all they do is put a tube on his exhaust and test the chemicals comming out and if they are over the maximum allowed then you fail, thats it.
it's also called a catback exhaust system meaning from your cat back. If you had a test pipe you would be fucked. You should't have a problem, i passed with a mini-me swap with intake, header, exhaust (apexi world sport II) in CT
