Recent welding pics from work
Well, I've been working for a comany that makes cabinets for xray machines. These cabinets will be used to xray a lot of the food you and I will eat. It's the latest craze in food service industries. We also make the cabinets that they xray your stuff with at airport terminals.
anyway, here's some pics:

Sorry for some of the closeups being a bit fuzzy.
All the welds must look like the bends in the material, from the outside. They are very picky on the finish of the shell.
The welds must all get good enough penetration that the guys that grind them down don't grind through them, but still yet, they will not accept any sugaring on the back side. We try to keep the weld to a smooth profile so that the guys don't have to grind a lot. It takes us about 10 hrs to do one cabinet, but takes them probably twice that. This is a new product, so we'll be trimming down the time for grinding and polishing. Right now, the "powers that be" think that you have to use a DA sander on the entire surface prior to glass bead blasting. I am working on convincing them that they're doubling their sanding time by doing this. All they need to do is sand out the deepest scratches, and the small ones will blast out.

It's not that hard really. A lot of it is being setup and using the right heat and speed. If I set it all up and you watched a little bit, you'd be surprised how quickly you could pick it up.

Werd they look great, but your right. Set up of the machine is more than half the battle. If you get the basic mechanics of welding down, its pretty easy. Especially with the new computer controlled power supplies and technology they have now.

most of them are. There's one weld on it that is an inside fillet weld. They like it to be kept small as posssible, so it's hard to get much of a pic of it.

once again !
you rock !
this stuff look thin, what guage is it ?
it's a lot harder to do a bead like that on thin guage than it is to do it on like.. 1/8 thick stainless...
Kranked.

I suck at remembering different guages of metal. It's about .100" thick. Not very hard to weld, but they allow ZERO burnthrough. The customer is VERY picky. Tolerances on the cabinet is something like .02mm. Rediculous. Good thing they don't check it for dimensions.
looks good
that's almost as bad as doing kitchen type stuff, i remember in 3rd year we had to do a 1/16 lap weld and a 1/16 butweld of stainless, no sugaring allowed. it was tough.
what happened to your baller pipefitting job?
