Ok pretty simple car 91 CRX Si, DOHC B16a1 swap 30k on motor recently all installed by professional shop car bought at local auto dealer. Great put together future project. But ..... Car took on some water in the AEM Cold Air intake about year ago After that the car shoots white smoke and idles high. Parked it for year, recently pulled it out of the garage cleaned the mice turds out of it and starting to work on it. Checked plugs all good, drailed oil after over year sitting oil looked good no sign's of major water just some grey sludge on top of oil plug. No oil in radiator, ok so it starts and sounds strong still, still billowing white smoke that smells really dry the smoke..... and what it does is starts up rev's instantly at 3000 rpm then few seconds go by 3500 RPM then 4000 RPM and up and up. so I shut it down dont wanna let it just sit there reving like that. the motor sounds good Im sure whatever it is, is top end. Could be vacum not sure why it would be though if everything was hooked up good prior to the water in the inake happend. I put fresh gas in it, Fuel injector cleaner additive , changed oil and basically trying to get idea of why its doing what its doing. prior to me bringing it to a shop.

 

do a compression check. sounds like your headgaskets bad, which is normal after sucking water threw your intake..

 

what am I looking at spending on that repair? am i better off getting a cheap entire gasket kit for cheaper off ebay prior to taking to shop to save on parts ? Ill have 1100 to spend on this repair on the 15th October

 

if you find out for sure its the headgasket, then if you did it your self it would cost about 200 but if you take it somewhere they will probably charge you 600+ in labor..

 

thanks mang, yeah Ill get it diagnostics testing done at a japanese shop that I trust down the road towing it there only. Then take it from there I suppose I ow it to this car to get it back on da road

 

I agree, headgasket....Should cost less than 200 tho. A replacement from honda is what, 80 bucks CDN, so ~65 bucks US...

Measure the headbolts, if they didn't stretch than reuse them. Usually they are within spec. If you want to ARP studs they should not be more than 120 bucks.

i am going to go with do it yourself as well. I would also suggest the ARP headstuds no matter what your plans are for the car. Make sure you get a metal gasket (even though i think honda switched all their gaskets to metal but just make sure). Good luck

 

yes thank you guys, for your imput - I will surely keep you all posted on my progress. Metal gasket sounds good, Though I was thinking boost in the future hopefully that would be good choice for that. as far as tryring to do the repair Myself I'm little hesitant about torque specs ect..ect.. Will probably just pay for the service.

Yeah, Honda switch to all metal head gaskets a few years ago. Even before that all vtec 1.6L and all DOHC engine came with a metal head gasket from the factory. Only engine that came with a paper/ metal gasket is the 1.5L engines. Better check like said above cause you never know. Also don't cheap out on the head gasket so go with a honda one. If the head gasket is the problem, get a machine shop (or do it yourself) and check for warpage. Check the block and the head and if needed get it machined. Nothing worse then doing all that work and discovering the head is still leaking.

 

your idle is from your fitv, as far as the smoke, are you using any coolant?

 

my guess is the head is warped also, i would check.

 

wow these responces are great, Yes Im taking it to a japanese shop I trust will give me accurate estimate reading on whats going on. If Indeed its head gasket I dont think having it machined would be too expensive to add to the bill
