O/T Do you videotape your race? Camera suggestions please!
I'm considering purchasing a camcorder so I can record my races. I saw a guy at the Solo2 that has a camcorder on a bracket attached to his front-passenger headrest posts...
Does anyone else do this? What camcorder do you recommend?
TIA!

I made the same thing.
You can buy any camcorder you want. It just depends on the features that you are looking for. If you want a good quality picture, go digital. If not, you can find cheap ones off ebay.

In terms of quality.....I think regular analog is better for the $.
Digital (I have one) reacts wierd to varying light conditions. But if you want to put the vids on your PC and share, digital is the way to go. Look for one that has good image stabilaztion. Go to Ritz or somewhere that will let you look at the camera off the security leash so you can see how the camer reacts to quick movements and such.
I would not recommend my Panasonic.

After having borrowed my friend's camcorder last weekend, I am seriously considering one. I've done quite a bit of research this week.
If you know you want to send video clips out to the internet, or make cd's, then Mini-DV is the way to go. Don't do Sony's digital8, that's a Sony only thing. Mini-DV is a standard.
I borrowed a Sony TRV11, and it was great! Picture quality like you wouldn't believe, and the mic was really quite nice too. I was surprised it picked up our voices over the blaring exhaust (or lack of one) on my car.
Places to buy?
http://www.digitalnetshop.com if you're looking for a Sony
http://www.onecall.com if you want a Canon (I'm leaning this way)

Is there a camera out there that that anyone has seen that has external inputs? I'm interested in mounting a camera or two on the outside of my vehicle, and maybe others on the inerior, and I need to feed them into something to make the recording.
I was even toying with the idea of running four different cameras into a quad and recording the output of the quad so that you can see all of them at once, like you see done with security cameras. Has anyone ever tried a setup like this?

If you can take a picture of the bracket I would love to see how it looks.

I know my mom's 3 year old Sony analog camcorder has RCA connections on it. I'm pretty sure we dumped back and forth between computer and camera for my highschool film class. I think the lighting issue pertains more to older digital camcorders. During that same film class, we shot a lot of scenes with my mom's camcorder and a borrowed digital. The analog definitely had much better white balance adaptability. The last time I used a nice high end Mini-DV camera, it seemed to be comparable to my mom's camera. No idea how much it costs though
Canon Elura2 - for incar f00tage - mounted to homemade bar that goes across the C pillars
For regular f00tage, I use the JDM Sony VX2000

In regards to needing a digital camera to make videos that can be played on your computer, you can always take analog camera footage and if you have a video card that can do it, input the video to your computer from there and make the video digital. The recording speed is 1x as far as I've seen, but it works and you can go ahead and get an analog camcorder to save yourself some money (but then you have to buy a video card that can take RCA inputs, or find someone that has one).
Or for that matter, get a video capture card for the computer. I have this feeling my ATI USB Wonder TV-tuner box ($70ish) isn't going to prove optimal for video capture.
