Question About What kind of oil i should use in my B20/Type R head????
Sounds kind of dumb but i wanted to get opinions. I have a CRX si with a fully built B20/Type r head. Je pistons,Skunk 2 cams etc ....etc . My compresson is obviously high. I just did an oil change today using Mobile 1 15-50 synthetic. Any one know of anything better?
well, i think youd free up some hp by using a lower viscosity oil, but if youre in california, w50 is ok cuz i bet its hot down there.
That wieght of oil is totally unnecessary, 5 or 10-30 should work just fine, 5-30 would be best IMO, less wieght for the motor to spin=less work for the motor and less fuel consumption.

i've seen WAY too many threads about people using oil that is way too thick. ALL hondas (with the exception of the newer ones which take 5w20 or 0w20) should be running on 5w30 oil, unless you have changed the internal tolerances specifically to use a thicker oil, or you have 100,000 or more original miles on the motor. you should not, i repeat SHOULD NOT run anything thicker than 10w30 in your honda, unless you are trying to avoid oil burning, or internal noise issues. when you use thicker oil in your honda, you are only putting your motor at risk for premature wear and tear. when you look at a stock oil cap and see 5w30 on it, thats the MANUFACTURER'S SUGGESTION. the manufacturer is the one spending countless dollars on research and development to come to this conclusion. i dont thing yer buddy down the road spent millions to figure out he likes 15w50 or 10w40 or whatever, so why do you listen to him.
A recommendation is a suggestion, nothing more.
Does one suggestion apply to all situations? No, that's why there is a chart matching viscosity to temperatures ranges. Car manufacturers don't make suggestions lightly, given all the people and conditions an engine will be exposed to. And when they make their suggestion, "best for the engine" may take a back seat to "legal obligations".
While the usdm manual just recommends a 5w-30 or 10w-30, but my edm B16 manual recommends a 15w-50 under certain conditions:

So a 15w-50 is too thick for a Honda engine? Apparently not.
