okay, i have this p28 ECU... it came out of a 96 del sol. it plugs direclty into my 96 civic harness..
--the label reads:
37820-P28-A53
957-100248
i know it's for an automatic. i've been searching and can't get a straight answer whether it's an obd-1 or obd-2 ecu. any help is appreciated.

P28's are OBD1

 

that's what i thought, but the plugs on the back of the ecu are obd2.. i think i'll convert it to manual and pull the 2nd o2 sensor. if it give me a code it's obd2.

supposedly there are OBD2 P28's. I cannot confirm that BUT if that P28 plugs directly into his eninge harness (which is a 96) with no conversion hanress then it must not be OBD1 as 96-00 is OBD2A/B

I've never come across a obd2 p28, and everything in the FAQ section says they are OBD1, but you never know. Take it to a shop and have them look at it. that's probably the best bet.

 

how many plugs are there? 1996 was first year for federally required obd2 systems. for most hondas, 96 was obd2a, and 97+ was obd2b. If obd2, then you should have 4 plugs going to the ecu, obd1 only has 3.

 

I can confirm there are OBD-2A P28's. In my friend's 97 Del Sol SI Automatic there was one. We thought it was OBD-1 and that we could easily chip it but we found out differently after opening the cover and finding OBD-2A internals. That ECU should work and if it plugs right in, that's a good sign!

 

It is definately an OBD2 ECU if it plugs into your 96 harness.

is out of a '96 DelSol SI, which means It's OBD2a.

 

Dont beleive everything you read even in a FAQ. Everyone on here screams that ALL 96-98 civics are OBD2A and 99-00 is OBD2B...so I went and bought a OBDD2B to OBD1 conversion harness and was quite surprised to see it didnt work. And more to my surprise, my 2000 civic HX is OBD2A

He's saying that his 00 HX was obd2a, not obd2b like the faq said. Bottom line is that obd2 is a pain in the ***. Unless inspection forces you to be obd2, I would highly recommend switching to the much easier to deal with (and uniform) obd1.

He also said that not all 96-98s were ob2a, but who cares anyway?

And about the whole switching to obd1, have you ever done it before? I have and it was the biggest pain in the *** EVER, definately not easier to deal with, everything is spliced, the entire engine harness is a cluster **** from hell.

i have done an obd1 swap in obd2 car, which is what i meant. Yeah, it wasn't easy, but well worth it.

Oh yea, it is worth it but there is a lot of bs to deal with along the way.

guys,,,can u run an ob2 ecu on a d15b engine even though it throws a CEL???? cuz i dont have money now for theobd1 ecu, and i have the motor already

 

the ecu plugs straight into my obd2a harness. i guess i'll try having it chipped and if not, it's going up for sale. another delay in my project =/

 

that ECU is not chippable. well at least not by the normal means.
There are some out there that can chip an OBD2 ECU.

Yeah I read into it a little bit on pgmfi...but in theend I stopped because getting a P28 (OBD1) was alot easier.

 

oh well... anyone have an OBD1 P28 for sale?
