I think I am. I'm currently selling my R on autotrader.com and I've worked out some details w/ a buyer and then I get this email from him. Looks very sketchy and I'm 99.9% pos. its a big time scam:

I'm delighted to tell you that my client has recommended your vehicle, with full interest and he has instructed me to carry on with his transaction, Hope the engine and body is in perfect condition?He also instructed me to inform you that payment will get to you in a cashier check of $26,400 which is a refund payment of a cancelled order earlier made by my client. Due to company policy this check has to be made out in this amount to you, Because company policyonly allows a refund payment on one cashier cheque. So you are required to deduct the cost of your vehicle( car) $17,950 when payment gets to you and refund balance $8,500to the Agent ( our shipper ) for him to be able to offset shipping & tax charges, and other cosmetic repair costs.After payment has reached you and balance sent to shipper, the shipper's agent will come for
inspection,pick up (of vehicle & signing of title papers), make some cosmetic touches and drive to a prepaid shipper to be shipped to my customer. Please confirm this and forward the following informations;

Address:
Phone number:
For payment to be made and send to you as soon as
possible.
Your honesty, understanding and co-operation will be highly

Does it make any sense to you to send someone some money back when they have told you they are going to overpay you ahead of time ?

Which is it, common sense or ignorance? You do know the difference, correct?

The guy asked the question because he was suspicious. Where is the problem in that? He obviously didn't see my thread, but I asked the same thing a couple of months back because I was in the same situation and had never seen an e-mail like that before.

Stupid me. I thought this was a community for getting questions answered from folks with the same interest/interests. I'm such a tool.

It's a scam. You might not want to believe me though, because I'm an ignorant dumb ***.

 

I get those emails all the time. Just tell them to send you the check and that you'll do it. Get the check, cash it, in 6 months if the money is still in your account ship the car to him.

They usually wont send a check but if they do it isnt legit.

It happened to me once and the Money order took 5 weeks to bounce! DON'T DO IT!

 

This is a fairly common scam, same as those 411 Nigerian scams.

 

It's a scam, and an old one at that.

just like everyone said above, its a scam. everytime i sell stuff on craigslist(its a popular website for local bayarea classifieds) i get bogus offers.

i was selling my b16a head package for 1200 and he wanted to offer me a 5k check from "his client" and expected me to refund the remaining balance. sounds kinda fishy doesnt it? im sure your reply was something along this line.

dont waste your time, i would die if i was scam for a ITR in this matter.

 

That is a scam for sure I went through the same emails when I was selling my evo's. I get so angry and pist because those people think we are so stupid.

They tried the same thing with me when I was selling my GSR on autotrader.

I really want to see somebody take the bank check for XX,XXX amount of dollars and then just not give them **** and see what happens...or at least meet up with the scammer and back out to waste his time... That would be great.
