I think it's a bit high really. However, if they stay pretty busy at a rate like that, maybe that's an indicator that they're pretty good. Hope so, huh?

I charge $75/hr. If they do good work, then $70/hr is definitely reasonable. If they don't know what they're doing, then you need to go somewhere else. lol

Seems pretty fair to me. It probably depends on the region that you live in though.

That's probably a good price.

I had the best welder in my area (I was told he was the best by other welders/shops in the area) weld a flange to a turbo, along with a few pipes together for me. He only charged me $30, but I gave him $50 for saving my *** big time.

It's all time based, a good welder can get alot done in an hour!

That's true. Hourly rates always can sound like the people are making a killing...but I always hate it if I tell somebody I can do something by the job, and they bring it to me dirty or needing grinding to make it fit, and stuff like that.

If I know there's grinding and fitting involved, I'll charge more for that than I will the welding.

I don't think i've ever charged someone more than $20 or so to just weld something up. If it's prepped and ready to weld and it takes me 10 minutes, i usually don't even charge them. But, if someone comes in and asks how much to weld some stuff and they don't have it with them, $75/hr covers my *** for whatever they bring in, if i'm still willing to do it after I see it! lol

yeah, i usually charge 75/hr
70/hr sounds pretty reasonable to me, shouldn't take more than an hour to do that sort of thing anyways.

I've heard from several of the shops i've stopped by to have something welded up that it's, let's say....$70per hour.

But then they can't give me an estimate as to how many hours it's going to take them to finish the job.

"well, it could take me 10 minutes...it could take me a whole day. I won't know until I start working on it"

Does that seem like a cop-out to you? Or at least a place I should stay away from?

If you're looking at the piece shouldn't you be able to give at least a rough estimate (within an hour or two) of how long it'll take to finish the job?

He should be able give a better estimate than 10mins to all day but in all honesty I don't anyone likes to come out and just say exactly how long they think it will take on time and material kind of thing. At least I don't. I give ballpark figures and maybe a "not to exceed" number. It kind of depends on what you are having done and the complexity of it. There is more of a chance of US being the ones screwed if we spout off some number and then can't stick to it. Sooooo....I quit building stairs. I'm sick of the BS. No one ever wants to pay what it's worth $70 an hr may sound like a lot but it's cheaper than most mechanics. Suck it up find a good welder and pay the man. It's not like welders in general are rich ya know

I do the exact same thing. People will come in and want something totally custom. Example - 1985 Buick Grand National owner that wants a water-air intercooler setup and he says he's searched all around and never seen one done. I can give a rough (read rough) estimate on parts and an even rougher estimate on labor but if it's never been done before and I don't know what I'm in for labor-wise until I'm already doing it. The time involved so far is somewhere around 20-something man hours but I won't charge that at $90/hour since a lot of the work is trial and error to see what will and won't work.

You have to pay to play.

Yeah, something very custom it's very hard to put a price on. Time is money, and custom stuff takes time. However, i got the impression that this question was more like a simple weld job, which any competent welder should be able to quote fairly accurately. Definitely better than 10min to all day. lol I'd find somewhere else man...

What exactly did you take in to get welded anyway?
