Toda B/exhaust install weird storry withen
Today was a very weird day for me. Well I am going to have my cams installed (Toda B’s) and have my exhaust put on. The exhaust is a 2.5inch custom piping and a SMS magnaflow muffler, well we install my exhaust had to weld and all kinds of fun ****, and we install my cams. I am also having a Ported head done by Josh at Topspeed, just wasn’t ready today he wanted to do a little more work on it. So that will go in next week.
So we start the car, the Exhaust is as Loud as a OPEN HEADER, and the car wont idle at all. So I call dave at SMS and am having magnaflow drop ship a 22inch resonator overnight, because the exhaust is deafening and ways to Raspy. So we get in the car and drive it the ****** pulls HARD, the toda cams are nice if you can live with the idle, I go to a stop sign and the car stalls, so I start it back up after a couple attempts and am now driving back to the Shop, Josh makes it Idle a lot better, and all is well I think.
I am driving up to FGCU and about 3 miles done the road my car Loses Major power, like it will still go but feels as if it only has 15hp, so I limp it into a parking lot and call Chris(who works a Topspeed, awesome B-series mechanic) and he come right down. He says wow that’s weird, with that I call another friend who Tows me back to Topspeed.
We arrive at Topspeed and I am upset to say the least, just because I hate when stuff goes wrong to my car, and I expected the worse. He take off the valve cover and see that my bolt in my cam gear slipped(AEM) and my exhaust cam was at -15deg. We account that to the power loss, everything was installed properly and tightened down. So we tighten the **** out of the bolts, and are going to get washers tomorrow.
Now my car runs fine but I am scared and only driving like 30% throttle and not over 4000rpms. The Toda B’s are nice, I cant hear VTEC engage with this exhaust, my VAFC is zeroed out, and cam gears are at 0 intake, -2 exhaust.
So tomorrow thanks to Dave my exhaust will be A LOT quieter, but the exhaust looks sweet almost stock. And hopefully the cam gears with the washers on the will tighten better. We already upgraded the bolt, so they should be fine, but maybe new cam gears would not be a bad investment, any opinions.
CLIFF NOTES: Exhaust VERY loud and raspy, Toda B’s very different but feel strong.
PS. This was why I didn’t post today.

Damn, sounds like you could have had some trouble there with the AEM gears. When you tightened them back up did you put any loctite on them? I'd advise it. Good to hear that the cams worked well for ya.

Toda cam gears are your friend.
And your V-AFC is at zero correction across the board?? Hmm...
What sort of idle rpm are you seeing? With no fuel added or taken out over stock, I'm surprised it's even running

1st gens = eazy fo snezy
2nd gens = eazy if you can read a vernier scale...
being able to read them... =
as long as they are making power... who cares what # they are set at?
on the dyno... just move them and run..

Um deffinetly do Toda Cam Gears. You won't find a better deal than $300 from a dealer, unless they are used because Toda requires that their Retail Price be kept and inforced to prevent the "Whoring Out" of their products, and I've been told if a dealer does sell them for less, they can lose their account w/ Toda. Kinda scared me when you said your car lost all power, and I saw AEM, I was Like OH SH*T!?! I just dropped off my GSR for the Toda B's today. But your sure the hell won't find me using anything to do the w/ the cams that is not Toda.
Vegeta, i think in one of your previous threads someone said something about the AEM camgears slipping? Anyway AEM gears will slip with cams such as toda and JUN. If you cant get the TOda gears, get the Skunk2 gears. I believe they have six bolts. When the gear slipped, do think there was any contact between the valves and pistons? This happened to a friend of mine and bent 4 valves. If there feels like there is a power loss, get a compression test done.
a little advice on the fuel, i thuoght mine felt fine with no fuel adjustments, then it felt a little boggish...so i added fuel (5% across the board), felt a little better but a litlte bog still, bump it up to +8 and she feels great, intake advanced quite a bit, exhaust a 0... can't hurt to try.
Never go cheap on the cam gears!!
The Toda cam gears are not difficult to read at all, but make sure you read the instruction carefully before you adjust it.

i dont understand why people continue to get AEM cam gears......i mean there has been much proof in the past that they do in fact slip...yet people still buy them and are surprised when they slip

Skunk cam gears or AEM's do just fine.
People put too much emphasis on high quality cam gears.
I've had AEM and Skunk gears before. I have not had a single problem EVER.
If you're spooked about cam gear slippage, put a drop of Loctite on the adjusting bolts. That's all.
BTW, Vegeta's car is crazy loud. I was driving the 93 DX auto, and I couldn't even hear my car next to his.
