i am looking to buy an ek hatch. what can i expect to pay for one thats 96-00?

Depending on miles I say anywhere from 5k-8k

Around here I see them for like $4k. On carsoup I saw one not that long ago for a little less than that.

It depends on where you live, like Mrs. PlanB said, here in SoCal they go for 5,000 to 8,000 on average.
