Shaky gets to ride a camel
Londoner Shane Byrne has been given his big break in MotoGP after being announced as a Camel Honda rider for the next two grands prix.
The former British Superbike champion made his MotoGP debut last year on an uncompetitive Aprilia before an even tougher stint with Proton KR this season.
But Byrne finally gets his chance to fight at the front after being signed up to replace the injured Troy Bayliss in Malaysia and Qatar.
"I am still waiting for something to go wrong and it's an unbelievable chance for me," said Byrne, who will become the first British rider to ride a factory machine in the premier class for over a decade.
"I am absolutely made up but I'm under no illusions how tough it will be. Everybody's expectations will be very high but it's a great chance for me after such a tough year.
"You never know what is going happen next and I've been given a big chance and I aim to give it my very best shot."
Byrne has missed the last two races after problems at Proton KR. The 28-year-old was contracted to KTM rather than the team and when the two parties split before the Czech Republic Grand Prix, he was left without a ride.
That misfortune has turned into a golden opportunity which Byrne is desperate to make the most of.
He added: "To ride one of the Camel Honda team's bikes is a massive opportunity which makes me very proud indeed, and I will give everything to show my true potential.
"I will meet up with the team on Tuesday in Sepang, a track I know quite well after having tested there a few times. I haven't ever ridden in Qatar so I'll have to try to get a good feel for the track early on there."
Will be good to see what he can do on something competitive.

Thanks for the good news! Now thats what I'm talking about. Shakey is a good rider and that KTM wouldn't do him any justice.
A big
to Camel Honda.
A big
to KTM for dropping their team mid season!!
BTW- whats your source on this?

I was watching the MotoGP and they spoke of it there. I am wondering when James Ellison (sp) will get a decent ride, he is definately better than his bike can give him. Oh and some other gossip that may or may not be old news is that Team roberts were scoping out Yamaha and Honda for engines. Kenny jr is going to be in the team this year as Suzuki dont want him.

It's been reported at every moto website.
This is his chance to show he deserves a motogp ride. Hopefully he can step up to the plate and pull a top ten out at least.

Shakey better post some good results. I remember him talking crap about the other riders (Nicky was one of them) that had factory support but couldnt produce
Well I'd wish him luck, but there's a reason they call him Shakey...
KTM stopped providing engines to Proton because they said they were being asked to do more than what was in the original deal (source - RRW).

All Nicky Hayden is is a poster child for the US ad men. He hasn't done much on the factory bike end of the day.

Yeah thats what they are saying but they've been doing supplying the riders salary, entry fees, etc. for some time now. So why pull the plug on the team now? It's because this season they have only scored one point! Its really laughable and they don't want to look any worse. That's the bottom line. Thing is leaving Team Roberts high and dry like this makes em look a whole lot worse IMO.

Even in the faded afterglow of his Laguna win your comments are valid. I wonder if Colin Edwards can step up as he gets acquainted with motogp life. It just amazes me to watch each race and see a few riders pulling away from a such a large pool of talented riders. Simply amazing.

Yet at the same time I have to wonder if the factory Honda squad is as well organized and productive as it should be. Alex Barros and Max Biaggi both failed to produce a win on a Repsol yet both were able to win on Camel Pons. I don't think either guy forgot how to ride over night. The only guy to win on a Repsol since Rossi has actually been Nicky. The fact that there was a big shake up at the Repsol squad before this season started belies the fact that something is/was not right internally with the team.
So for Shakey to criticize Nicky saying crap like "Oh, I would've won by now if I were him" is kind of bullshit. Shakey is good but he hasn't shown enough to anybody to earn a ride on any of the satelitte Honda squads. I know what he was getting at is that he has similar credentials to Nicky yet Nicky got the factory Honda ride but complaining about it makes you look like a whiny jealous bitch.
At the end of the day I'm glad he'll get his shot. At the very least I'm thinking he'll do better than Troy usually does.

People quickly forget that when Rossi left Repsol he took most of the Repsol championship crew. Not just the crew he won with, the guys that had helped win 9 of the last 10 championships. That's a huge part of the success that used to be Repsol. Great point JMU

I agree with some of that BUT do you think that if Rossi had moved to say Ducati he wouldn't be top3? 90% of the bikes are capable of winning, look at Cappi last weekend, didn't do so bad up against the factory Honda did he? Hayden for me just isnt GP quality. He has had 2-3 seasons at this level and still has two main issues. Lack of race craft and an inability to lead from the front. He won the US GP which is still great but he had the knowledge of the circuit. He should be on the podium regularly as on paper he has the ability and the bike. Its just not like that in real life and no amount of team organisation is going to make that difference out on the circuit. Factory bike + uber tyres has to = results, even if you have Mr Ed in the pits.

Don't get me wrong, Nicky has had more than enough time to be getting results. At the very least he shouldn't be getting beat by any of the satelitte Honda riders. I could excuse Nicky's sophomore slump but he needs to close out the season with either a string of podiums or another win. He's in 5th now but damn, he was 5th place in his rookie season, he needs to climb into the top three.
Still, I don't think Shakey has much room to talk. "I coulda, I woulda" is kind of bullshit in the racing game. The fact is that you didn't. Its exactly the same kind of thing Biaggi used to say about Rossi and the Honda. Well, they switched rides and Rossi still kicks his ***.

This test could be the best or worst thing for him. I agree that you can talk a second a lap but its different doing it. Biaggi was a classic, Rossi's got better tyres, he gets A kit engine parts, different tyres thats why he is beating me. He has been a little quiet recently about it. I wonder what Rossi could do if he really went for it on this years RCV?

Speaking of the Camel ride, it looks like Chris Vermuelen will fill in for the last 3 races of the season. I really hope Vermy can score a ride on one of the Honda seats, I'm hoping it will be the one vacated by Gibernau.

Gibernau on the Ducati next year will be amusing. Still at least he'll have something new to blame the usual 'Honda-Rossi-Tyres-fuel-handling-officials' routine needed freshening up

Shakey you were saying something about winning if you had a Honda...
I mean damn, he's even getting rolled by one of the WCM Blatas
http://www.superbikeplanet.com...x.htm
Hopefully he'll get up to speed in the next session. Maybe take some setup notes from Barros or something.
