Default Engine swap ideas please

Ok still I am still doing research for a friend and his car. He has a Civic sedan with the 1.6 DOHC motor. I have been told that the best thing to do, for more power, would be to either turbo the motor (NA much prefered, don't want to go forced induction) which I think would cost too much to do properly (the car is a daily driver).

So what engine swaps would you guys reccomend, and what (very briefly) would be needed to do them, and how difficult would they be?

(We don't get type R motors here, but we do get the 1.6 VTEC and the Prelude motors).

gsr motor. if the car allready has a b series in it you wont need much else. since it sounds like you dont know much about swapping i would stay away from the h22.

Alot of fab work, you'd have to make your own mounts. If you go B series, you can buy mounts from hasport.

the motor is a ZC non VTEC 1.6 DOHC, in full Japanese spec (137 bhp std). The car is also right hand drive.

How difficult is the b16 swap?

Also what about frankenstein combos, like putting a 1.8 bottom end on the ZC, or mating it to a VTEC head?

I'd probably drop in the B16, but it really depends on what you're looking to get out of her and what your upgrade plans are. Good Luck though !!

I heard that the Prelude motors require quite major work just to get them physically in the engine bay, also they ruin the handling.

The car is not for drag racing, cornering is important too!!

How easy is the B16 swap, apart from the wiring what else takes time?

Do you need a different gearbox, and a new engine management (ie VTEC or aftermarket)?

I wanted an H22 but **** that. I'll wait until they have worked out all the bugs out of the swap and the mounts don't cost more than some engines.

Why not build the ZC and do forced induction? That is what I am doing. Personally I wish I would have waited and did the GSR swap but oh well. I am looking at 12s on a stock car this spring

If thats the case then you might as well go with the H22a or the K20 swap.

From what I've heard, the H22 or K20 swap is not that easy and it changes the handling characteristics (more understeer = not good).

Also over here in South Africa we don't get the same parts as you guys (so no HAsport mounts).

So can I put a 1.8 bottom end on the ZC motor?

But like the K-series mounts, they still require a good bit of fabrication work to install. Don't think this is a bolt-in kit like the B-series mounts.

There is no 1.8 liter D-series bottom end. At least nothing from the factory that you could pick up for a song and bolt your head to. You would have resleeve, and this alone won't get you 1.8 liters. It would also cost alot. Or you could stroke. But the D-series already has a long stroke and poor rod ratio. So this is not really a good option (oh, and it's also expensive). Much cheaper and better would be to go B-series (if you can get any B18 motors where you live).

A general rule to remember with frankenstein's is that you can't mix from different engine series. B-series heads don't go on D-series blocks, d-series heads don't go on b-series blocks. As has already been stated, there aren't any 1.8l D-series blocks and it'd be way to much work to make the one on their 1.8l. This rule isn't true for everything. The DOHC ZC's are D-series but you generally can't mix and match with them (though I have seen at least one post on here where someone semi-successfully put a ZC head on another d-series block).

As has been stated a B16 is your best bet, however since it's difficult for you to get mounts there, I'm not sure that's your best option. Perhaps someone else knows more options then I do.
