I've got my clutch, flywheel and tranny all out, so I'm replacing my rear main seal.

Is there some kind of trick to getting this thing out? I'm stumped.

 

undo the tiny 10's

and pop it off.

it is held on by 2 dowels that line it up so you might need to give it the flathead flick.

yeah, and you have to remove the oil pan also.

Here's what you do-

pry it out with a small flat head screwdriver, clean out the area, and evenly press in the new one- tap around the outside with a hammer...LIGHTLY. It will go right in

 

Just work with it. Its a bitch at first but after time it gets easier (obviously) But i had a bitch of a time at first too.

 

Yeah, I just found out from Dustin that I have to remove the oil pan. I'm just not willing to work on it any more tonight.

 

i change these things all the time at work and i never remove the oil pan .... just jently put a screwdriver between the crank and the seal and pry outward .. do this in 3-4 different places and the seal will come out ... before installing the new seal lubercate the inside of the seal with grease and carefully re install the seal . it is very easy and takes 5 minutes .. dont do the remove the oil pan trick it is a waste of time ..

 

It's usually Hondabonded on there pretty good so expect to need some measurable quantity of "finesse" to remove it. Don't forget to clean the mating surface on the block before putting the new one on.

this is a much easier way to do it...just be careful not to damage the crank. even little scratches on the crank by the seal can = small oil leak

as long as your carefull you will never scratch the crank surface and yes it is a better way to do it ... the honda-bond on that plate will never leak so there is no reason to take it off .. i have actually seen people cause more harm by doing it this way ... when they pry on the plate to remove it they crack it and later have a oil leak that they end up pulling the tranny again for ... so either way is good but just changing the seal is a better way to do it
